Artist’s Statement

PARADOX

“My paintings illuminate tensions of color and light in relation to mark making, sound and poetry; work that bridges the connection of living entities to their environment. Stylistically, my process flows in spontaneous writing, action, reflection, fluidity and synchronicity to communicate intense human emotions.” — Anne Marchand, 2023

Anne Marchand creates her own hybrid visual language; sharing moments, feelings and ideas by weaving together the mysterious and mundane into a paradoxical whole. Her work is informed by images that come from the Hubble Telescope as well as other space probes. Using this information, she looks for patterns that occur in the macrocosm of the universe as well as in the microcosm space of self as she combines themes of spirit and matter.

Drawn to images that open the viewer to question personal experience, consciousness and transformation, Marchand probes the intersections linking mankind to the universe. Painting becomes a metaphor to activate her imagination and acts as a place where what is real and what is imagined overlap. The painting process becomes a joyful place, a place of spontaneous reverie, as she faces the forces of emotion, expression, longing, understanding, beauty, and perspective.
