When you think of memorable jazz tunes, the composers who wrote them don’t always readily come to mind.  Over a series of three concerts, one of the Peninsula’s favorite pianists, Bob Phillips, will take us on a musical review highlighting three composers whose writings became mainstays in the world of jazz.  Bob’s most recent performance for Jazz At The Cherry showcased the wonderful music of composer George Gershwin

The next stop on this musical journey will take us into musical world of composer Henry Mancini on Sunday, February 9th.  Joining Bob will be singer/songwriter Julie Capili and some of the Peninsula’s finest jazz artists, including guitarist Adam Astrup, sax player Paul Contos, bassist Dennis Murphy and drummer Mike Shannon.

The final show for this series will take place on Sunday, April 27th featuring another musical genius.

Sunday, February 9th at 2pm. Doors open at 1:30 for wine and light fare included in the ticket price. Tickets are $45, available on Eventbrite.com.

Bob Phillips: Phillips is a consummate musician and without a doubt one of the finest performers on the Monterey Peninsula. Well known for his exceptional technique and versatility, Bob has performed five times at the Monterey Jazz Festival and is currently in demand all over Central and Northern California.  He has also been honored by The Monterey Jazz Festival with an endowment in his name which helps to sustain over 20 Monterey County high school students chosen every year from over 28 schools to be members of the Monterey County All-Star Band.

Julie Capili’s creativity and playfulness are evident in her music, bringing a sense of joy and wonder to her performances. Her subtlety and exquisite control display a maturity beyond her years. Her influences are eclectic, including artists such as Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy, and Tori Amos. And although her voice has drawn comparisons to many great singers, she possesses a style of her own.
