Soapbox Stageworks present Playfest ’23, their first annual 10 minute play competition at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts on Saturday, August 26th, at 7:00pm. Doors open at 6:30pm for a wine and light fare reception (included in the ticket price). Tickets are $35, available at eventbrite.com or by calling (831) 664-6587.

Eight plays were selected from a pool of two hundred submissions from across the country. The audience will determine which playwrights earn the coveted first and second prizes. Four dramas and four comedies will come to life through staged readings performed by local talent:

Drama:

Light by Barbara Blatner A mother and her grown children struggle with divorce and loss of a parent.

Nearly Departed by Michael Waterson  An unsuspecting stranger helps a person with suicidal thoughts.

Inherit the Dumb by Carl L. Williams The plight of being an honest science teacher

The Unspoken by Aldo Accomero A happy bride learns of her husband’s well kept secret.

Comedy:

Match Play by Seth Freeman An older woman teaches a younger man a lesson about dating.

Budget Airlines by Bruce Guelden You get what you pay for, even with a high end airline

Speed Dating by Curt Strickland A widower and a widow waste no time in finding a new partner.

Dress Blues by Donald Luftus  A dress shop owner and his partner attempt to make a woman feel good in her skin.
