DESCRIPTION:Dick Whittington has made several appearances on the Jazz At The Cherry stage\, and each one has been both delightful and unique. We are pleased to welcome him back once again for what promises to be another outstanding afternoon of straight-ahead jazz\, featuring music by Dizzy Gillespie\, Miles Davis\, and Benny Golson\, along with beautiful standards by Harold Arlen\, Johnny Mandel\, Carlos Jobim\, and others. Dick will be joined by a couple of his favorite sidemen—accomplished musicians drawn from the Monterey Peninsula’s rich pool of jazz talent. \nDick is well known and much loved by Peninsula jazz audiences\, not only for his warm and comfortable stage presence\, but also for an extensive career that has included performances with many of the great names in jazz\, among them Chet Baker\, Sonny Criss\, Stan Getz\, Dexter Gordon\, Charlie Haden\, Billy Higgins\, Bobby Hutcherson\, Barney Kessel\, Scott LaFaro\, Charles Lloyd\, and Gary Peacock. \nPlease join us for another afternoon of outstanding jazz\, good company\, and musical camaraderie. DESCRIPTION:Portraits in Song is an intimate concert series highlighting the craft and storytelling of exceptional emerging artists. Each limited-capacity evening invites audiences to experience songwriting up close — sharing not only original music\, but the stories and creative journeys behind it. \nThe fifth concert in the series features award-winning singer-songwriter Cindy Alexander\, an LA native and Carmel transplant whose eleven albums\, film and television placements\, and decades of touring have been built on the connection she forges with a room. Opening the evening is Two Rivers\, the acoustic duo of Richard Bryant and Kyle Kovalik\, pairing soaring vocals and inspired harmonies with wicked guitar work. \nThe performance will be held Saturday\, October 17th\, at 3:00pm\, doors open at 2:30. Tickets are $25 (wine and light fare provided)\, available on Eventbrite.com. \n\nAbout Cindy Alexander: \nCindy Alexander writes songs people sing along with and lyrics they quote to their friends. Affectionately called “Pnut” by her fans\, she has a voice that defies her petite stature\, moving from rich\, earthy lows to the trill of a coloratura soprano. Technical range aside\, what she’s known for is the connection she builds with a room. \nA Los Angeles native and grateful Carmel transplant\, she was mentored early by celebrity voice coach Nathan Lam and hit the road in 1999 opening for The Bacon Brothers\, a collaboration that continues today. Eleven albums\, two EPs\, and multiple singles later\, her work has landed in film and television including *So You Think You Can Dance*\, *Dawson’s Creek*\, and *Here on Earth*\, and on compilations alongside Sarah McLachlan\, Aimee Mann\, and Norah Jones. She has toured the US\, Asia\, and Europe and shared stages with America\, John Hiatt\, Suzanne Vega\, and The Gin Blossoms\, with her fans crowdfunding nearly every project along the way. \n  \n\n\nAbout Two Rivers: \nTwo Rivers is Richard Bryant and Kyle Kovalik performing as an acoustic duo. Intelligent songwriting\, soaring vocals\, inspired harmonies\, and wicked guitar. Richard Bryant has toured the world as an acclaimed singer with rock legends such as The Doobie Brothers and The Little River Band. Kyle Kovalik has been flooring audiences for decades with his fiery guitar stylings\, acoustic and electric.

DESCRIPTION:PorchLight Stories\nThursday\, October 29 at 7:30pm.\nTickets $25 – Tickets available through Eventbrite.com\nSponsored by Camille d’Avenas \nInspired by the weekly NPR “Moth Radio Hour\,” 8 storytellers take the stage\, each presenting a 5 to 7 minute true story about themselves without prompts or notes. Each personal story is central to the storyteller and defines a turning point. This round of stories includes tales of adventure\, strange lands\, jobs gone sideways\, saying goodbye\, employment mishaps\, and paying your rent. The storyteller’s perception of reality\, themselves\, or their relationships is altered in unexpected ways as is our own. Expect to be intrigued\, amused and moved by these very personal stories\, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself bursting out with laughter or holding back tears. The performance is approximately one hour long\, followed by a half hour reception in the Cherry gallery with the storytellers. \nThe evening is hosted by Monterey Improv director\, Rich Westbrook. Storytellers include: artists Anna Rheim and Polly Osborne; Student Debt Crisis Center founder\, Natalia Abrams; community activist\, Joan Costello; events producer\, Joe Fletcher; seamstress\, Holly Goodwin; adventurer\, Dixie Dixon; and Moth regular\, JP Frary. Tickets are $25\, available through Eventbrite.com. \nThe event is produced by the Carl Cherry PorchLight Committee which includes Carl Cherry Center Executive Director\, Robert Reese and Board Members\, Ellen Osborne\, Jim Dultz\, Anne Mitchell\, Kris Swanson\, Camille d’Avenas and Robin McKee. This is the third and final show of 2026. The next show is February 25\, 2027. Submission deadline is January 24\, 2027. \n  \nParticipants \nHOST \nRich Westbrook has spent decades getting people to stand up in front of strangers and take chances. As director of Monterey Comedy Improv\, a longtime Toastmaster\, teacher\, performer\, and professional instigator of spontaneity\, he believes the best stories happen when people are willing to be real\, take a risk\, and see what happens next. \nSTORYTELLERS \nAnna Rheim is a storyteller. Examining the humor and pathos of the human condition is her abiding interest. She has travelled the world and has had careers in business\, education\, and art. Anna is a life coach\, photographer\, bookmaker\, golfer\, hiker\, and longtime resident of Carmel Valley. \nPolly Osborne is an artist and architect living in Monterey\, California. She was mentored by her uncle in art\, her stepfather in architecture\, and her parents in humor and good sportsmanship. She shows her work at the Carmel Art Association. Her pesky little sister made her tell this story. \nNatalia Abrams is the founder of the nonprofit Student Debt Crisis Center and a longtime advocate for student loan reform. Her work has been featured in The New York Times\, NPR\, and CNN. A Los Angeles native\, Natalia lives with her husband\, Steve\, and their dog\, Bowie. In her spare time\, she takes improv classes. \nJoan Costello is a 5th generation Californian. Before settling down\, she sailed as cook and deckhand on charters through the Seychelles\, Greece\, Turkey\, and Israel. She then spent years teaching math and science to eighth graders sharing a beautiful life with her husband and son. These days\, she makes quilts\, paddles the bay and enjoys being a part of the wonderful community of Monterey County. \nJoe Fletcher has been an entrepreneur for 30 years excelling at concert promotion\, fundraising and event management. Since 1989\, Fletcher has produced over 3000 concerts and festivals around the world with top names in contemporary music including Eminem\, Ray Charles\, Beyonce\, Pink\, Bob Dylan and many others. \nHolly Goodwin grew up in Carmel Valley Village. Her sewing skills led her to costume design for entertaining\, stage\, magic\, radio\, TV\, theatre\, and some really bad film work. I’m eager to try storytelling; it’ll be the first time on stage as me. \nDixie Dixon moved from Utah to Carmel in 1990. She has had many adventures in her life and has written about some of them\, utilizing material from her past experiences in various jobs and her many travels around the globe. \n JP Frary designs and builds furniture and sculptures in a wood shop on the old Alameda Naval Base. He specializes in using recycled materials in ways that make them look new. He is the Resident Storyteller at Redwood Nights in Fairfax\, CA. SUMMARY:Benefit Reading and Conversation with Award-Winning Poet Ellen Bass
DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts is pleased to present an afternoon of poetry and conversation with celebrated\, award-winning poet Ellen Bass on Sunday\, November 15th\, at 3:00 PM. \nProceeds from the event will directly benefit the ongoing work of the Poet-in-Schools Program that brings poetry workshops to high schools across Monterey County. Our current poet\, Patrice Vecchione\, encourages young writers to trust their imaginations and discover their authentic voices through creative expression. Funds raised from this afternoon reading will ensure the continuation of these vital workshops as well support as the Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts High School Poetry Awards\, the Cherry Center’s annual flagship event celebrating and supporting young literary talent across Monterey County. \nAs Ellen Bass once noted\, “Poetry is the most intimate of all writing. I want to speak first from me to myself and then from me to you.” During this special event\, Bass—a former Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and recipient of five Pushcart Prizes—will read poems and talk about her work. She was recently awarded a 2026-2027 California Arts Council Legacy Artist Fellowship.
