SUMMARY:High School Poetry Awards: Thinking Out Loud
DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts and The Monterey Public Library are pleased to announce the 2016 Monterey County High School Poetry Awards. As part of Thinking Out Loud\, the Cherry Center’s annual exhibit devoted to high school arts\, the high school poetry awards encourages the art and practice of poetry by offering educational workshops to high school students throughout Monterey County.The Awards provide students with an opportunity to master public speaking skills\, build self-confidence\, and learn to write poetry. Now in its 23rd year\, the poetry awards have inspired hundreds of high school students to discover classic and contemporary poetry.\n\n\nCertificates of Merit\, Cash Awards and Books of Poetry will be awarded at a reading and ceremony honoring the student poets beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday\, April 30th at The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts at 4th & Guadalupe. The awards are free and open to the public. Additionally\, an anthology celebrating the work of contributing students will be published by the Cherry Center.\n\n \nThe poetry awards are held in conjunction with the Cherry Center’s annual high school art exhibit\, Thinking Out Loud. The art exhibit runs from March 5 – April 1 at can be viewed at the Cherry Center.\n\n\nGet Creative.\nThe world around us is a place of end-less fascination\, fun and facts. We hope you will learn some new ways to explore your neighborhood\, parks\, schoolyard\, backyard and wild places with the help of Monterey County High School Poetry Awards. To instigate the creative process\, the Monterey County High School Poetry Awards offer workshops to help students make the connection between place and imagination\, between language and landscape. For information on workshops please call 831-624-7491.\n\n\nRules \n\nSubmissions must be original poetry in English\, Spanish or a combination of both.\nThe author must be presently enrolled in a Monterey County High School.\nNo more than three poems allowed per author\, and no poem may be more than 40 lines in length.\nThere are no restrictions as to content\, style\, form or metrical device.\nAll entries must be typed. Student’s name\, address and phone number must be printed on each poem. DESCRIPTION:4orm & Space\, an exhibit exploring spatial relations and the creative possibilities of form\, on display now through May 12. \nThe exhibit includes new work by Stefani Esta\, Josh Mitchell\, Valerie Ostenak and Rick Soto. \nOrganized by the Carl Cherry Center\, the exhibit includes examples of radical abstraction\, conceptual restraint\, and psychological exploration. \nHere are the artistic expressions of four individuals who often find more in less. It is understandable that an exhibit in a historic house that is also home to Zen meditation and Yoga would host the pure expressions of these artists in its gallery. Whether through the simplicity of a hard line\, the openness of a canvas\, the texture of hard surfaces or the multiple layers of a collage resulting in a complex whole\, each person’s expressions speak to their personal quest for meaning. For the viewer\, their work provides an opportunity to find a quiet place to contemplate and wonder and find their own meaning – in the midst of our busy days\, what more could one ask for? \nThe exhibit will be on display Mondays through Fridays from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts and Off the Rack Production are pleased to announce the revival of LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE\, a play about the challenges of the heart–and the closet.  The play opens Friday\, May 20th and continues through June 12th. \nEvery item in a woman’s closet holds a memory. Some are sweet\, some are funny\, and some are oh\, so sad. SUMMARY:Seeing the Truth Arrive
DESCRIPTION:Seeing the Truth Arrive\, a reading exploring the poetry of Muriel Rukeyser and Robinson Jeffers\, and recent verse by Kathryn Petruccelli and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts\, will be Co-sponsored by the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation. \nThe lives of poets Muriel Rukeyser and Robinson Jeffers intersected several times:  once\, in 1941\, when Jeffers was on the panel of judges that named Rukeyser the winner of the first Harriet Monroe Poetry Award; and again in 1947\, when she lived in Carmel close to Tor House. Of art and specifically poetry\, Rukeyser wrote:  “It will apply to your life; and it is more than likely to lead you to thought or action\, that is\, you are likely to want to go further into the world\, further into yourself\, toward further experience.” (from Life of Poetry) \n”Women and poets\,” Rukeyser writes in her poem “Letter to the Front\,” “see the truth arrive.”  In this reading the focus will be on seeing the truth arrive. \nKathryn Petruccelli is a teacher and freelancer. After moving to New England from the Central Coast\, she established Literary Cadences\, a service that curates appearances for east coast authors in Northern California. She’d like to do more radio stories\, but mostly she spends her time complaining about the lack of ocean in western Massachusetts. Her essay “How to Read this Essay” won the San Francisco’s 2015 Litquake Essay Contest. She is currently working on a series of essays about ice cream and community building. \nA Professor Emeritus at Monterey Peninsula College where he taught composition\, literature\, public speaking and humanities for 32 years\, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts is co-editor of the college text Bridges; co-editor/co-translator of two works from the Telugu\, Sudha (Nectar) by Chalam and The Selected Verses of Vemana\, both of which have been accepted into UNESCO’s Collection of Representative works:  Indian Series; and co-author of Bowing to Receive the Mountain:  Essays by Lin Jensen and Poetry by Elliot Roberts.   His poetry has appeared in various journals and anthologies\, including Fire and Ink:  An Anthology of Social Action Writing; Ping-Pong\, the Journal of the Henry Miller Library; and in his introduction to Rivulets of Light:  Poems of Point Lobos and Carmel Bay by John Dotson. \nPoet-in-the-Schools for the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Ruchowitz-Roberts presents poetry writing workshops in high schools throughout Monterey County and coordinates the annual Monterey County High School Poetry Awards. \nRuchowitz-Roberts serves as 1st Vice President of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation in Carmel\, California.  He also coordinates the Foundation’s annual Prize for Poetry and its annual reading series\, and serves as a tour docent.   He coordinated the National Endowment for the Arts “The Big Read:  The Poetry of Robinson Jeffers\,” during which he read and performed Jeffers’s poetry at venues throughout Monterey County\, including local libraries\, high schools and colleges.  In 2009 he read Jeffers’ poetry at two bi-lingual readings in Prague\, the Czech Republic. \n Tickets $15 \n

DESCRIPTION:Lens on the Water\, a photography exhibit exploring the images\, themes and metaphors of the Pacific waters\, opens Friday\, January 8th at Carl Cherry Center.  \nA reception for the photographers will be held January 8th from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Music by Color Space.\nThe exhibit includes fine art photography by four established and emerging surf photographers.  All pieces on display will be available for purchase. \nCurated  by Kelly Sorensen of On the Beach\, the exhibit can be seen Monday through Friday from 11 to 4 p.m. or by appointment through February 19th.  Photography includes work by John Bostwick\, Patrick Bremser\, Bart Keagy\, Erik Landry and Eamon Lucas. \nWith each photographer having a distinctive style and approach to the same ‘surf’ subject matter\, the exhibition shows how a shared experience–in some cases in the same area of California–can result in individual\, contrasting work by using different photographic styles. Coinciding with the exhibit\, the Cherry Center will launch a series of collaborative events\, including musical performance and surf-related films. \n  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:The Actor’s Collective of Monterey presents Holmes for the Holidays: An Evening of Sherlock Holmes One Acts adapted by local director\, actress and playwright Cindy Womack from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes for the Holidays consists of two of the world’s only consulting detective’s most famous cases. Beginning with “The Case of The Blue Carbuncle.” During the Christmas holidays a war veteran hard-up for money brings a little case to Holmes purely to help another unfortunate. Holmes’s deductions trigger surprising events that will change the veteran’s fortunes—and Holmes’s. This case gives us Sherlock at the top of his game in an unusually whimsical adventure. In stark contrast\, in the act two case of “The Dying Detective\,” Dr. Watson must deal with a fatally infected Holmes and a meeting between his now desperate and rapidly failing friend\, and the learned Culverton Smith. Is the Great Detective meeting with his possible savior or having a showdown with a deadly enemy? \nThis is the World Premier of Holmes for the Holidays which was workshopped and presented at The Western Stage and the Carl Cherry Center earlier this year. Comprised of 23 paintings\, the exhibit will include recent work by Tom Davies\, Deanna Forbes\, Sarah Healey\, Mary Liz Houseman\, Karen Kleid\, Margaret Niven. \nOrganized to explore various time periods\, styles\, and themes in landscape painting\, Natural Histories investigates the relationship between abstraction and landscape painting\, the effects of photography on landscapes and the examination of the materiality in painting.  The exhibit brings together the work of artists who have been working with landscape and may lack conventional aesthetic hooks of expression\, narrative\, and beauty; but these paintings are powerful aesthetic statements that reflect the complex and ambiguous relationship between humans and the environment—a relationship of particular importance here in the West. \nThe exhibit can be viewed during open Gallery hours which are Monday – Friday from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

DESCRIPTION:Feleboga: American and Norwegian Folk Music at the Carl Cherry Center \nHans-Hinrich Thedens (banjo\, guitar\, song\, hardingfele\, dance) \nElizabeth Gaver (fiddle\, hardingfele\, song\, dance) \nMattias Thedens (fiddle\, hardingfele\, dance) \nThe Oslo-based family band Feleboga will perform Thursday\, July 9th\, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Feleboga repertoire includes American old-time fiddle tunes and ballads as well as different genres of traditional  Norwegian tunes\, from the older\, intricate listening pieces (lyderlåter) and dance tunes (slåtter) for solo hardingfele\, to the newer gammeldans tunes (waltz\, reinlender\, polka) for hardingfele or violins and guitar. Feleboga has performed and taught in Norway\, Germany\, Poland\, Iceland\, Thailand\, and the US (Minnesota\, Indiana\, New York\, Washington D.C.) Tickets are $15.00. \nInformation/reservations: \n831-624-7491 or http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1692456 \nThe Carl Cherry Center for the Arts is located at Fourth and Guadalupe in Carmel. \nHans-Hinrich Thedens received his doctoral degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Oslo\, writing his dissertation about hardingfele spelemann Salve Austenå and his repertoire. He is the director of the Norwegian Folk Music Collection at the National Library in Oslo and is involved in several research projects. During a sabbatical to Tennessee in 2004\, Hans-Hinrich took up the banjo and has since taken part in courses with several leading old-time musicians. He was a member of the country and western band\, The Oklahoma Lonestar Heartbreak Institute\, in Hamburg and of Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag\, pioneering contemporary arrangements of Norwegian folk music. \nElizabeth Gaver plays early stringed instruments and has performed and recorded extensively with the medieval ensemble\, Sequentia (Paris). She is also a member of Ulv\, Pro Musica Antiqua\, Oslo\, and Modus and has performed with several baroque ensembles. Elizabeth often plays for the Telemark Dance Club in Oslo and at the Norwegian Folk Museum. She founded Solveien Spelemannslag\, a folk music group for children\, at the Nordstrand Steiner School. Elizabeth has learned old-time fiddling from players in Kentucky\, Tennessee and North Carolina. \nMattias Thedens has played fiddle for six years and has learned from several well-known American and Irish fiddlers. In summer 2014 he was awarded the Ralph Blizzard scholarship at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina. In addition\, Mattias plays hardingfele and has learned tunes from archive recordings as well as from young performers in Norway. Mattias has danced Norwegian traditional dances since he was four and performed with Feleboga since he was five. He has just finished tenth grade and will start high school in the fall. \n
