DESCRIPTION:  \n“The Mirror Left Behind\,” an extraordinary solo performance by Len Perry\, runs for two performances March 10th and 11th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Show times are 7:30 p.m.  \nPart comedy\, part drama and part philosophy\, Mr. Perry’s performance chronicles his life from age twelve to the present\, taking the audience on his odyssey into making music\, making love\, and making life his dream come true. “I want to touch people’s hearts\, make them laugh\, cry\, think\,” Mr. Perry says. \nAt a young age\, Florida native Len Perry left behind life on the farm to seek fame and fortune on Broadway. SUMMARY:The Mirth-O-Matics
DESCRIPTION:The Mirth-O-Matics\, Monterey County’s stellar improvisational comedy troupe\, returns to the Carl Cherry Center Friday\, February 3rd at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets $20. \nA Mirth-O-Matics evening of theater games features a company of actors\, a bare stage and a lot of ideas whose outlines are about as fixed as liquid mercury.  Sometimes it starts with an unlikely combination of characters placed in equally improbable situations: Whoopie cushions\, politicians\, bagel salesmen and roller derbies can all find their way into a Mirth-O-Matics’ skit.  Other skits are prompted by the audience\, who are encouraged to suggest scenes. \nSometimes the situation is transformed time and again as the characters undergo a series of split-second metamorphoses: an irritated polka troupe on a bus\, who then turn into faith healers at a revival meeting\, gamblers at a casino\, accusers at a witch trial and players in a rugby game. \nHowever bizarre the setup\, it is unique to the moment\, no script and no structure except for the games\, a fanciful array of exercises whose requirements range from making as many exits and entrances as possible in one scene to switching repeatedly back and forth from English to gibberish in another.

DESCRIPTION:Infinite Jest: Portraiture\, Whimsy and Memory\, an exhibit of recent paintings by Jim Dultz\, Beau Bernier Frank and David Richardson\, opens Friday\, January 13th in the gallery. A reception will be held for the artists from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nA portrait sounds like a relatively straightforward thing — a picture of someone — but across time it has proven to be a much more mysterious creature. There are adopted portraits\, abstract portraits\, vanity portraits\, portraits of homes and desks and backpack contents\, postmortem portraits\, and portraits that are just piles of candy. This exhibit explores portraiture as a site of radical artistic experimentation\, as it moves between conceptual and symbolic associations from the artist and their subjects. The exhibit can be seen through February 17th.

This year\, harpsichordist Michael Peterson joins Elizabeth Gaver\, violin\, and Penny Hanna \, viola da gamba\, to present an assortment of styles from the 17th century featuring rarely heard\, but still very tasty tunes from Jenkins\, Hume\, Lawes\, Marini\, and Vitali. \nDerived from the Portuguese barroco\, or “oddly shaped pearl\,” the term “baroque” has been widely used since the nineteenth century to describe the period in Western European art music from about 1600 to 1750. Comparing some of music history’s greatest masterpieces to a misshapen pearl might seem strange to us today\, but to the nineteenth century critics who applied the term\, the music of Bach and Handel’s era sounded overly ornamented and exaggerated. DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts (CCCFA) presents After Robinson Jeffers: Photography from Poetry. For this exhibition\, the Carl Cherry Center curates original photographs from the Monterey Peninsula in collaboration with the poetry of Robinson Jeffers’ verse\, creating lyrical arrangements that explore how image and text resonate. \nA reception for the exhibit will be held Friday\, November 18th from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public.\n \nA poetry reading on Saturday\, November 19th at 3 p.m. will include Jeffers’ verse as well as original writing by local poets George Lober\, Patrice Vecchione and Elliot Ruchowitz Roberts. The interpretative component will extend Robinson Jeffers’ reach into the community\, drawing on poetry to explore the connections between Jeffers\, photography and the verse of contemporary writers. DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts welcomes six exhibiting artists during the Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour weekend\, September 24 and 25\, 2016. The six: Bobbie Belvel\, Gloria Jelladian\, Edi Matsumoto\, Vivienne Riggio\, Lester Schwabe\, and Kay Walters\, include painters\, sculptors\, photographers\, and glass makers. Each will present recent work.\n\nThe Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour is a free\, twenty-six-year-old event that welcomes the public into artists’ studios and exhibition spaces to meet the artists and see art where it starts. The art works on display are for sale\, and many artists demonstrate an aspect of their process. One hundred fifteen artists and arts organizations are participating this year\, over two weekends. The first weekend\, September 24 and 25\, features coastal\, Peninsula\, and Carmel Valley artists. The second\, October 1 and 2\, features Salinas\, North County and Salinas Valley artists. DESCRIPTION:John Weed and Stuart Mason play compelling\, exciting music that explores the connections between Ireland and America\, both ancient and modern. On fiddle\, guitar\, mandola\, and banjo they bridge the Atlantic to summon a music that resonates with every audience. With the well-known Celtic powerhouse Molly’s Revenge\, Stuart Mason and John Weed have appeared on festival stages from Glasgow\, Scotland to Shanghai\, China. Both are also members of the old-time bluegrass group Little Black Train with mandolin wizard Kenny Blackwell. \nAn accomplished traditional-style fiddler\, John Weed has lived in Ireland and immersed himself in the regional styles of Clare and Donegal. The result is an old-time Irish fiddling style that compliments his forays into bluegrass\, Appalachian\, swing\, and Scandinavian music. A classically trained violinist\, John leverages his understanding of the instrument to coax emotion from every tune. He has returned to Ireland many times to hone his skills and collect tunes at their source. \nStuart Mason was born in the hills of West Virginia\, grew up in Cincinnati\, and has been playing traditional music on stage for over 35 years. He is known for his authentic vocals\, driving backing on guitar and mandola in alternate tunings\, and inability to hold his whiskey. On banjo he plays in the older clawhammer and two-finger styles. Stuart has won awards for traditional singing (Goleta Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention)\, mandola (Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest)\, and songwriting (West Coast Songwriter’s Association). Deeply rooted in Americana\, Stuart’s original songs are the direct outgrowth of the many years he has performed traditional music. \nTickets: $20

DESCRIPTION:The Mirth-O-Matics\, Monterey County’s stellar improvisational comedy troupe\, returns to the Carl Cherry Center \nFriday\, September 9th at 7:30pm\nA Mirth-O-Matics evening of theater games features a company of actors\, a bare stage and a lot of ideas whose outlines are about as fixed as liquid mercury.  Sometimes it starts with an unlikely combination of characters placed in equally improbable situations: Whoopie cushions\, politicians\, bagel salesmen and roller derbies can all find their way into a Mirth-O-Matics’ skit.  Other skits are prompted by the audience\, who are encouraged to suggest scenes.\n \nSometimes the situation is transformed time and again as the characters undergo a series of split-second metamorphoses: an irritated polka troupe on a bus\, who then turn into faith healers at a revival meeting\, gamblers at a casino\, accusers at a witch trial and players in a rugby game.\n\nHowever bizarre the setup\, it is unique to the moment\, no script and no structure except for the games\, a fanciful array of exercises whose requirements range from making as many exits and entrances as possible in one scene to switching repeatedly back and forth from English to gibberish in another.\n\n\nTickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com

DESCRIPTION:Feleboga returns to the Cherry Center.\nHans-Hinrich Thedens (banjo\, guitar\, song\, hardingfele\, dance) \nElizabeth Gaver (fiddle\, hardingfele\, song\, dance) \nMattias Thedens (fiddle\, hardingfele\, dance) \nThe Oslo-based family band Feleboga repertoire includes American old-time fiddle tunes and ballads as well as different genres of traditional  Norwegian tunes\, from the older\, intricate listening pieces (lyderlåter) and dance tunes (slåtter) for solo hardingfele\, to the newer gammeldans tunes (waltz\, reinlender\, polka) for hardingfele or violins and guitar. \nFeleboga has performed and taught in Norway\, Germany\, Poland\, Iceland\, Thailand\, and the US (Minnesota\, Indiana\, New York\, Washington D.C.) \nTickets are $15 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com \n \nHans-Hinrich Thedens received his doctoral degree in ethnomusicology from the University of Oslo\, writing his dissertation about hardingfele spelemann Salve Austenå and his repertoire. He is the director of the Norwegian Folk Music Collection at the National Library in Oslo and is involved in several research projects. During a sabbatical to Tennessee in 2004\, Hans-Hinrich took up the banjo and has since taken part in courses with several leading old-time musicians. He was a member of the country and western band\, The Oklahoma Lonestar Heartbreak Institute\, in Hamburg and of Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag\, pioneering contemporary arrangements of Norwegian folk music. \nElizabeth Gaver plays early stringed instruments and has performed and recorded extensively with the medieval ensemble\, Sequentia (Paris). She is also a member of Ulv\, Pro Musica Antiqua\, Oslo\, and Modus and has performed with several baroque ensembles. Elizabeth often plays for the Telemark Dance Club in Oslo and at the Norwegian Folk Museum. She founded Solveien Spelemannslag\, a folk music group for children\, at the Nordstrand Steiner School. Elizabeth has learned old-time fiddling from players in Kentucky\, Tennessee and North Carolina. \nMattias Thedens has played fiddle for six years and has learned from several well-known American and Irish fiddlers. In summer 2014 he was awarded the Ralph Blizzard scholarship at the Swannanoa Gathering in North Carolina. In addition\, Mattias plays hardingfele and has learned tunes from archive recordings as well as from young performers in Norway.
