SUMMARY:The Mirth-O-Matics
DESCRIPTION:The Mirth-O-Matics\, Monterey County’s stellar improvisational comedy troupe\, returns to the Carl Cherry Center Saturday\, June 25th at 7:30 p.m \nA Mirth-O-Matics evening of theater games features a company of actors\, a bare stage and a lot of ideas whose outlines are about as fixed as liquid mercury.  Sometimes it starts with an unlikely combination of characters placed in equally improbable situations: Whoopie cushions\, politicians\, bagel salesmen and roller derbies can all find their way into a Mirth-O-Matics’ skit.  Other skits are prompted by the audience\, who are encouraged to suggest scenes.\n \nSometimes the situation is transformed time and again as the characters undergo a series of split-second metamorphoses: an irritated polka troupe on a bus\, who then turn into faith healers at a revival meeting\, gamblers at a casino\, accusers at a witch trial and players in a rugby game.\n\nHowever bizarre the setup\, it is unique to the moment\, no script and no structure except for the games\, a fanciful array of exercises whose requirements range from making as many exits and entrances as possible in one scene to switching repeatedly back and forth from English to gibberish in another.\n\n\nTickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com

SUMMARY:Reading - Celebrating the Art of Getting Dressed
DESCRIPTION:Words Dressed & Undressed: Writing About Women & Clothing \nLocal author\, poet\, and playwright\, Patrice Vecchione will present a multi-media production on the subject of women and clothing. She believes that getting dressed in the morning is the best armor against almost whatever the world may throw at a person. If you feel good about how you look when you walk out the door\, you’re more likely to make it through the day smiling. That may mean nothing more than a pair of jeans and bright red lipstick or it may require a little more ingenuity—a Oaxacan huipil\, purple stockings\, and cowboy boots. Patrice has been enamored by attire and bucking against convention ever since resisting the boring Catholic School girl uniform she had to don during her formative years. She’ll present an evening of work to delight\, surprise\, and make you want to get dressed up the next morning\, even if just for the office. \nPatrice Vecchione is the editor of many poetry anthologies\, the author of two collections of poems and two nonfiction books\, most recently\, Step into Nature: Nurturing Imagination and Spirit in Everyday Life (Simon & Schuster). She teaches creative writing\, poetry and collage to adults and children. More at www.patricevecchione.com. \nTickets $15 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com

Written by Nora and Delia Ephron\, based on the book by Ilene Beckerman\, and directed by Michael Bond\, LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE is a sweet and saucy collection of life-changing stories triggered by memories of specific accessories or articles of clothing. \nThe Carl Cherry Center for the Arts and Off the Rack Production are pleased to announce the revival of LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE\, a play about the challenges of the heart–and the closet.  The play opens Friday\, May 20th and continues through June 12th.  \nTickets are $20 and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com or by calling 831-624-7491 \nJune 2nd at 7:30 pm Words Dressed & Undressed: \nWriting About Women & Clothing — Reading with Patrice Vecchione.\nTickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.brownpapertickets.com\n  \nOutfitting Dreams and Dressing Our Wounds \nWe knew before we could explain it\, and we knew it needed no explanation – it was right there for everyone to see: the dress was magical. Our mother slipped into the dress – not the plaid cotton shirtwaist or striped shift or corduroy jumper – it was that soft black chiffon\, that shimmering black taffeta\, that mesmerizing black lace — and suddenly\, magically\, domestic wrangler Mom was transformed into the alluring woman over whom Daddy was bent\, fastening her necklace with his lips at her ear. \nWe knew the magic would work for us\, too. Oh\, we might have to wait till we were twelve or thirteen\, we already knew the rings and wristbands and jeans jacket kept his eyes tracking us in school. And by fifteen we knew the great T shirt and the right jeans and must-have-these-boots-in-California-summers were what made us shine\, what would prove\, without fail\, completely enchanting. \nOf course we helped\, gave just a boost to that little dress with spaghetti straps: we wore just the right heels\, added just the most diaphanous scarf\, carried just the tiniest of bags. And naturally\, he was charmed. \nWe remember just how he fell in love that night. We can point to the record. Right there in the corner of the closet floor. Those heels\, which also yielded blisters\, are boxed along with all the pointy-toed/square toed/round-toed/open-toed/high-top-sneaker high heels. We danced. We laughed. We kicked them off. \nThe shoes lifted us into the clouds\, or at least high enough to gaze into his eyes. And that dress: slinky\, soft\, thin as air\, almost not there. When he placed his hand on shoulder\, waist\, hip –  well — it was like skin to skin. And that black/red/cream/floral/velvet/jersey/spandex sheath is hanging in the far right corner of that closet where we go to cry over John and Paul and Chuck and Alistair. Where we go to assure ourselves that he loved us then. Where we go to reset the clock\, incant the mantra that the little outfit could entrance anew. \nAnd then we take courage\, go out\, and find the next little piece of magic for the next transformation. \nSpecial thanks to our Sponsors: Madrigal\, She & Katie Foster Design

SUMMARY:4orm & Space
DESCRIPTION:4orm & Space\, an exhibit exploring spatial relations and the creative possibilities of form\, on display now through May 12. \nThe exhibit includes new work by Stefani Esta\, Josh Mitchell\, Valerie Ostenak and Rick Soto. \nOrganized by the Carl Cherry Center\, the exhibit includes examples of radical abstraction\, conceptual restraint\, and psychological exploration. \nHere are the artistic expressions of four individuals who often find more in less. It is understandable that an exhibit in a historic house that is also home to Zen meditation and Yoga would host the pure expressions of these artists in its gallery. Whether through the simplicity of a hard line\, the openness of a canvas\, the texture of hard surfaces or the multiple layers of a collage resulting in a complex whole\, each person’s expressions speak to their personal quest for meaning. For the viewer\, their work provides an opportunity to find a quiet place to contemplate and wonder and find their own meaning – in the midst of our busy days\, what more could one ask for? \nThe exhibit will be on display Mondays through Fridays from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Seeing the Truth Arrive
DESCRIPTION:Seeing the Truth Arrive\, a reading exploring the poetry of Muriel Rukeyser and Robinson Jeffers\, and recent verse by Kathryn Petruccelli and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts\, will be Co-sponsored by the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation. \nThe lives of poets Muriel Rukeyser and Robinson Jeffers intersected several times:  once\, in 1941\, when Jeffers was on the panel of judges that named Rukeyser the winner of the first Harriet Monroe Poetry Award; and again in 1947\, when she lived in Carmel close to Tor House. Of art and specifically poetry\, Rukeyser wrote:  “It will apply to your life; and it is more than likely to lead you to thought or action\, that is\, you are likely to want to go further into the world\, further into yourself\, toward further experience.” (from Life of Poetry) \n”Women and poets\,” Rukeyser writes in her poem “Letter to the Front\,” “see the truth arrive.”  In this reading the focus will be on seeing the truth arrive. \nKathryn Petruccelli is a teacher and freelancer. After moving to New England from the Central Coast\, she established Literary Cadences\, a service that curates appearances for east coast authors in Northern California. She’d like to do more radio stories\, but mostly she spends her time complaining about the lack of ocean in western Massachusetts. Her essay “How to Read this Essay” won the San Francisco’s 2015 Litquake Essay Contest. She is currently working on a series of essays about ice cream and community building. \nA Professor Emeritus at Monterey Peninsula College where he taught composition\, literature\, public speaking and humanities for 32 years\, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts is co-editor of the college text Bridges; co-editor/co-translator of two works from the Telugu\, Sudha (Nectar) by Chalam and The Selected Verses of Vemana\, both of which have been accepted into UNESCO’s Collection of Representative works:  Indian Series; and co-author of Bowing to Receive the Mountain:  Essays by Lin Jensen and Poetry by Elliot Roberts.   His poetry has appeared in various journals and anthologies\, including Fire and Ink:  An Anthology of Social Action Writing; Ping-Pong\, the Journal of the Henry Miller Library; and in his introduction to Rivulets of Light:  Poems of Point Lobos and Carmel Bay by John Dotson. \nPoet-in-the-Schools for the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Ruchowitz-Roberts presents poetry writing workshops in high schools throughout Monterey County and coordinates the annual Monterey County High School Poetry Awards. \nRuchowitz-Roberts serves as 1st Vice President of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation in Carmel\, California.  He also coordinates the Foundation’s annual Prize for Poetry and its annual reading series\, and serves as a tour docent.   He coordinated the National Endowment for the Arts “The Big Read:  The Poetry of Robinson Jeffers\,” during which he read and performed Jeffers’s poetry at venues throughout Monterey County\, including local libraries\, high schools and colleges.  In 2009 he read Jeffers’ poetry at two bi-lingual readings in Prague\, the Czech Republic. \n Tickets $15 \n

SUMMARY:Holmes for the Holidays: An Evening of Sherlock Holmes One Acts
DESCRIPTION:The Actor’s Collective of Monterey presents Holmes for the Holidays: An Evening of Sherlock Holmes One Acts adapted by local director\, actress and playwright Cindy Womack from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes for the Holidays consists of two of the world’s only consulting detective’s most famous cases. Beginning with “The Case of The Blue Carbuncle.” During the Christmas holidays a war veteran hard-up for money brings a little case to Holmes purely to help another unfortunate. Holmes’s deductions trigger surprising events that will change the veteran’s fortunes—and Holmes’s. This case gives us Sherlock at the top of his game in an unusually whimsical adventure. In stark contrast\, in the act two case of “The Dying Detective\,” Dr. Watson must deal with a fatally infected Holmes and a meeting between his now desperate and rapidly failing friend\, and the learned Culverton Smith. Is the Great Detective meeting with his possible savior or having a showdown with a deadly enemy? \nThis is the World Premier of Holmes for the Holidays which was workshopped and presented at The Western Stage and the Carl Cherry Center earlier this year. So\, whether you are a Rathbone\, Cumberbatch or Downey Sherlockian\, you and theater goers who enjoy the world’s most enduring mysteries are sure to enjoy. \nHolmes for the Holidays features Jeffrey T. Heyer as Sherlock Holmes. He is co-founder of Actors Collective\, the first Actor in Residence at PacRep and TWS Artistic Associate. A long time admirer of the Master Reasoner\, Mr. Heyer is delighted to be returning to the role\, as he has been cast as Holmes a previous eight times\, a different problem causing the cancellation of no less than five of these productions. He appeared on stage as Holmes at TWS in The Mask of Moriarty (1999) and Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure (2008)\, as well as in The Painful Predicament of Sherlock Holmes for the Carl Cherry Arts Center Monologue Festival in 2009. \nPerformances on Friday – Sundays – December 4th – 13th. \nFriday and Saturday shows at 730pm and Sundays @ 2pm \nPurchase tickets here OR by calling 831-624-7491

DESCRIPTION: A reception for the artists will be held Friday\, November 13th from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nNatural Histories\, an exhibit celebrating western landscape\, opens Friday\, November 13th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Comprised of 23 paintings\, the exhibit will include recent work by Tom Davies\, Deanna Forbes\, Sarah Healey\, Mary Liz Houseman\, Karen Kleid\, Margaret Niven. \nOrganized to explore various time periods\, styles\, and themes in landscape painting\, Natural Histories investigates the relationship between abstraction and landscape painting\, the effects of photography on landscapes and the examination of the materiality in painting.  The exhibit brings together the work of artists who have been working with landscape and may lack conventional aesthetic hooks of expression\, narrative\, and beauty; but these paintings are powerful aesthetic statements that reflect the complex and ambiguous relationship between humans and the environment—a relationship of particular importance here in the West. \nThe exhibit can be viewed during open Gallery hours which are Monday – Friday from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Bruce Forman: The Red Guitar...a jazz libretto
DESCRIPTION:SECOND SHOW ADDED\, STARTING AT 9pm (goes until 10:00 p.m.)\nThe Red Guitar\, draws on Bruce Forman’s  decades of experience as a leading jazz guitarist\, and demonstrates his skill as a storyteller and teacher.  The result is a work that is even greater than the considerable sum of its parts. \nA story in jazz\, and about jazz\, it is built upon the armature of a classical tale that is often seen as a metaphor for how artists become possessed by their art.  The story has deep roots in European and American mythos.  From the red slippers that were a literal symbol of imperial authority in the Roman Empire\, through Hans Christian Andersen’s nineteenth-century retelling of The Red Shoes\, and more recently\, in several distinguished film adaptations of this powerful theme\, the underlying tale has resonated with audiences for centuries. \nBruce Forman took on a classic quest as a young man–to grow beyond his roots in Texas\, acquire artistic mastery\, conquer the urban world\, and achieve knowledge and sophistication. His reputation and circle of collaborators grew\, and his horizons expanded: leader on 16 albums; sideman on numerous others; composer; arranger; artist in residence; university educator; philanthropist; composer-performer on a jazz libretto\, The Red Guitar\, and three Clint Eastwood soundtracks: Flags of Our Fathers; Million Dollar Baby; and Hereafter. \nPurchase tickets
