SUMMARY:Parallel Lives
DESCRIPTION:A Caffrey Girl Production in collaboration with the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\nIn the opening scene\, two Supreme Beings plan the beginning of the world. Once they decide on the color scheme of the races\, a little concerned that white people will feel slighted being such a boring color\, they create sex and the sexes. From this moment\, the audience is whisked through an outrageous universe\, where actresses will play men and women struggling through the common rituals of modern life: teenagers on a date\, sisters at their grandmother’s funeral\, a man and a woman in a country western bar. With boundless humor\, Parallel Lives reexamines the ongoing quest to find parity and love in a contest handicapped by capricious gods or in this case\, goddesses.\nShow Dates & Times\nFriday\, February 26th and Saturday\, February 27th at 7:30 pm\nSaturday\, February 27th and Sunday\, February 28th at 2:30 pm \n\nFor information\, call 831-624-7491\n*Sales from concessions will be donated to the Gathering for Women\, a refuge for homeless women on the Monterey Peninsula. \nTickets $20

SUMMARY:Holmes for the Holidays: An Evening of Sherlock Holmes One Acts
DESCRIPTION:The Actor’s Collective of Monterey presents Holmes for the Holidays: An Evening of Sherlock Holmes One Acts adapted by local director\, actress and playwright Cindy Womack from the stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes for the Holidays consists of two of the world’s only consulting detective’s most famous cases. Beginning with “The Case of The Blue Carbuncle.” During the Christmas holidays a war veteran hard-up for money brings a little case to Holmes purely to help another unfortunate. Holmes’s deductions trigger surprising events that will change the veteran’s fortunes—and Holmes’s. This case gives us Sherlock at the top of his game in an unusually whimsical adventure. In stark contrast\, in the act two case of “The Dying Detective\,” Dr. Watson must deal with a fatally infected Holmes and a meeting between his now desperate and rapidly failing friend\, and the learned Culverton Smith. Is the Great Detective meeting with his possible savior or having a showdown with a deadly enemy? \nThis is the World Premier of Holmes for the Holidays which was workshopped and presented at The Western Stage and the Carl Cherry Center earlier this year. So\, whether you are a Rathbone\, Cumberbatch or Downey Sherlockian\, you and theater goers who enjoy the world’s most enduring mysteries are sure to enjoy. \nHolmes for the Holidays features Jeffrey T. Heyer as Sherlock Holmes. He is co-founder of Actors Collective\, the first Actor in Residence at PacRep and TWS Artistic Associate. A long time admirer of the Master Reasoner\, Mr. Heyer is delighted to be returning to the role\, as he has been cast as Holmes a previous eight times\, a different problem causing the cancellation of no less than five of these productions. He appeared on stage as Holmes at TWS in The Mask of Moriarty (1999) and Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure (2008)\, as well as in The Painful Predicament of Sherlock Holmes for the Carl Cherry Arts Center Monologue Festival in 2009. \nPerformances on Friday – Sundays – December 4th – 13th. \nFriday and Saturday shows at 730pm and Sundays @ 2pm \nPurchase tickets here OR by calling 831-624-7491

SUMMARY:Anne & Pete Sibley
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated as a “disarming virtuosic experience\,” the Sibleys hit the national spotlight in 2009 with a blue ribbon finish in the “Great American Duet Sing Off” on National Public Radio’s A Prairie Home Companion. They’ve performed live at NYC’s Town Hall\, Washington DC’s Kennedy Center and on festival stages such as North Carolina’s Merlefest to Colorado’s Rockygrass.\n\nWith two voices in harmony\, a guitar and a banjo\, Anne and Pete Sibley’s  songs are a journey\, a joining of music and story.  Raised in the Northeast\, settled in the West\, the Sibleys seek to convey music more attune to an experience\, than a simple song.\n\n Tickets are $25 and can be reserved by calling 831-624-7491 or online here\n

SUMMARY:Mirth-0-Matics
DESCRIPTION:Tragedy\, comedy or contemporary culture?  It makes no difference to The Mirth ‘O’ Matics\, who take suggestions from the audience on a range of subjects and then creates a series of scenes and skits\, using whatever is at hand. Scenes might include star-crossed lovers\, dance songs\, sword fights\, turkeys\, politicians\, rhyming couplets\, disguises and asides from the audience. The Mirth ‘O’ Matics have gained quite a bit of notoriety as the only troupe on the Central Coast to take audience suggestions and turn them into laugh-out-loud 3-5 minute skits. As usual\, the show will feature plenty of audience participation so be sure to leave your inhibitions at the door. \nTickets are $15 and can be reserved by calling 831-624-7491 or  Purchase online here

SUMMARY:Natural Histories: Celebrating Western Landscape
DESCRIPTION: A reception for the artists will be held Friday\, November 13th from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nNatural Histories\, an exhibit celebrating western landscape\, opens Friday\, November 13th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Comprised of 23 paintings\, the exhibit will include recent work by Tom Davies\, Deanna Forbes\, Sarah Healey\, Mary Liz Houseman\, Karen Kleid\, Margaret Niven. \nOrganized to explore various time periods\, styles\, and themes in landscape painting\, Natural Histories investigates the relationship between abstraction and landscape painting\, the effects of photography on landscapes and the examination of the materiality in painting.  The exhibit brings together the work of artists who have been working with landscape and may lack conventional aesthetic hooks of expression\, narrative\, and beauty; but these paintings are powerful aesthetic statements that reflect the complex and ambiguous relationship between humans and the environment—a relationship of particular importance here in the West. \nThe exhibit can be viewed during open Gallery hours which are Monday – Friday from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.

SUMMARY:Bruce Forman: The Red Guitar...a jazz libretto
DESCRIPTION:SECOND SHOW ADDED\, STARTING AT 9pm (goes until 10:00 p.m.)\nThe Red Guitar\, draws on Bruce Forman’s  decades of experience as a leading jazz guitarist\, and demonstrates his skill as a storyteller and teacher.  The result is a work that is even greater than the considerable sum of its parts. \nA story in jazz\, and about jazz\, it is built upon the armature of a classical tale that is often seen as a metaphor for how artists become possessed by their art.  The story has deep roots in European and American mythos.  From the red slippers that were a literal symbol of imperial authority in the Roman Empire\, through Hans Christian Andersen’s nineteenth-century retelling of The Red Shoes\, and more recently\, in several distinguished film adaptations of this powerful theme\, the underlying tale has resonated with audiences for centuries. \nBruce Forman took on a classic quest as a young man–to grow beyond his roots in Texas\, acquire artistic mastery\, conquer the urban world\, and achieve knowledge and sophistication. His reputation and circle of collaborators grew\, and his horizons expanded: leader on 16 albums; sideman on numerous others; composer; arranger; artist in residence; university educator; philanthropist; composer-performer on a jazz libretto\, The Red Guitar\, and three Clint Eastwood soundtracks: Flags of Our Fathers; Million Dollar Baby; and Hereafter. \nPurchase tickets

SUMMARY:OLLI Film Series: Adaptation (Part 2) - Short Story to Feature FIlm
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays\, September 3\, 10\, 17\, 24; October 8\, 15 (6 sessions)\n3:00 pm – 6:00 pm\nCarl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Carmel\n$60 \nThis series follows last spring’s popular presentation of feature films which came to life from their origins as short stories. Join us for an in-depth examination of six compelling marriages of story and film across a broad spectrum of genres\, thematically linked with questions of illusion\, reality\, imagination and point of view. In addition to the analysis of the films\, we will explore the adaptation from print to screen and the connectedness between the two. To enhance our comparison\, we will also read the stories before viewing the films. \nFacilitator\nMalcolm Weintraub\, Carmel resident and inveterate cineaste\, is a devotee of film studies paying special attention to cinema thematics. His popular series include the first part of “Adaption – Short Story to Feature Film\,” “Moviews on Moveiws\,” “Satirical Anti-War Cinema\,” and more. \nMore info including online registration

SUMMARY:EXHIBIT: Meditation on Color and Form
DESCRIPTION:PETER HILLER  & NANCY GENN\nMeditation on Color and Form\n\nMay 29th — July 10th\, 2015\n\nCLOSING WINE RECEPTION added July 10 at 4:30pm – 6:30pm\nMeet and greet and have a treat with artists Nancy Genn and Peter Hiller. \n\n\n\nMeditation on Color and Form\, an exhibit of recent photographs\, sculpture and paintings by Nancy Genn and Peter Hiller\, opens Friday\, May 29th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. A reception for the artists will be held Friday\, May 29th from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. A conversation with the artists about the process of their work will be held Saturday\, May 30th at 3 p.m. in the gallery.\n\nMeditation on Color and Form focuses upon how shape\, texture\, line\, light and color are all balanced and considered not as merely descriptive flourishes\, but as essential\, striking forces themselves in both photography and painting.\n\nNancy Genn’s paintings reflect her own relationship between abstraction and representation\, the titles evoking a sense of place rather than specifying its absolute parameters. The paintings and sculpture\, which may include calligraphy\, pencil marks\, bits of an architect’s topographical map and Persian script\, allude to a narrative while refusing to tell only one tale. Her abstraction paintings provoke visceral responses — they are reminiscent of landscapes\, seascapes or cityscapes\, but reach for something beyond a facade or blue horizon. The active visual fields draw the viewer in\, allowing us to become part of her experience\, as the experience simultaneously becomes our own. Ms. Genn has exhibited at the Fresno Art Museum\, the Mills College Art Museum and the Kala Institute in Berkeley\, among other venues. She lives in Berkeley.\n\n Selected from photographs taken over the past year\, Peter Hiller’s work spotlights 14 studies of surfaces and straddles the line between representation and abstraction\, revealing how ordinary objects often serve as a departure for an artist’s abstract vision–or\, alternatively\, how an artist’s abstract form may subtly suggest recognizable elements. In his recent work\, Hiller uses photography to transform rusted\, scarred and peeling paint into delicate compositions\, isolated into lush dry points\, a la Jackson Pollock. Like the abstractionist\, Hiller deftly drips and spatters a graceful arabesque of form\, space\, light and texture. Mr. Hiller has exhibited at the Chadron State College\,  Mari Sandoz Center. Chadron\, Nebraska\, Westmont Museum of Art. Santa Barbara\, Ca. and the National Steinbeck Center\, among other venues. Peter Hiller lives in Carmel.\n\nInformation: (831) 624-7491. The exhibit  can be seen Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, or by appointment\, through July 10th\, 2015.\n\nThe Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Fourth and Guadalupe\, Carmel\, CA (831) 624-7491.

SUMMARY:EXHIBIT: Coit Tower - The Carmel Connection
DESCRIPTION:When the Works Progress Administration commissioned murals for the interior of San Francisco’s iconic Coit Tower in 1933\, it was suggested that “some of our best painters” be commissioned for the project on Telegraph Hill. Two of those artists– Maxine Albro and Parker Hall–were married in 1938 and moved to Carmel. Other artists associated with the New Deal project visited the area over the years and Colonel Harold Mack\, who built the hacienda outside Monterey which later became Santa Catalina School\, was a member of the original committee established to oversee the WPA’s Coit Tower plans. \nThe Coit Tower bond to Carmel will be celebrated in an exhibit of photography\, original art and sculpture April 17th through May 22nd in Cherry Gallery\, with an opening reception on Friday\, April 17th from 5 – 7:00pm. In addition to artwork and sculpture by Ms. Albro and Mr. Hall\, the exhibit will include photographs of all 25 original Coit Tower muralists and biographical material curated by Jon Golinger\, past president of the association Telegraph Hill Dwellers and the leader of the Protect Coit Tower Restoration effort. Additionally\, Mr. Golinger will give a talk and slide show on the project on Saturday\, April 18th beginning at 2 p.m. in Cherry Hall. \nLast May\, a $1.7 million restoration project instilled new life into the tower’s historic fresco murals that depict the city and state during the Great Depression and repaired the roof so it won’t leak onto the works of art. \nOne of the first projects to be funded by the W.P.A\, a number of the artists were influenced by the Mexican muralist\, Diego Rivera\, including Ms. Albro and Mr. Hall\, who visited him in Mexico. Not without its own controversy\, some of the muralists were censured for portraying scenes suggesting sympathy toward Marxist ideologies. \nHall’s 9′ x 13′ Coit Tower fresco depicts collegiate sports circa 1933: rivals Stanford and the University of California in a contest and students playing badminton\, baseball\, and basketball. Maxine Albro’s 10′ x 42′ fresco is a balanced tableau of California’s rich agricultural life. \nThe exhibit can be seen Monday — Friday\, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, or by appointment. Information: (831) 624-7491. \nSponsors:  Funding has been generously provided by Michael R. Vollstedt; John T. Kurzava Jr.\, CFP\, CRPC; Hilary Baumstarck\, Carrie Theis (Hofsas House) and Merrill Lynch
