SUMMARY:Mason & Weed: Ireland to Appalachia in Music
DESCRIPTION:John Weed and Stuart Mason play compelling\, exciting music that explores the connections between Ireland and America\, both ancient and modern. On fiddle\, guitar\, mandola\, and banjo they bridge the Atlantic to summon a music that resonates with every audience. With the well-known Celtic powerhouse Molly’s Revenge\, Stuart Mason and John Weed have appeared on festival stages from Glasgow\, Scotland to Shanghai\, China. Both are also members of the old-time bluegrass group Little Black Train with mandolin wizard Kenny Blackwell. \nAn accomplished traditional-style fiddler\, John Weed has lived in Ireland and immersed himself in the regional styles of Clare and Donegal. The result is an old-time Irish fiddling style that compliments his forays into bluegrass\, Appalachian\, swing\, and Scandinavian music. A classically trained violinist\, John leverages his understanding of the instrument to coax emotion from every tune. He has returned to Ireland many times to hone his skills and collect tunes at their source. \nStuart Mason was born in the hills of West Virginia\, grew up in Cincinnati\, and has been playing traditional music on stage for over 35 years. He is known for his authentic vocals\, driving backing on guitar and mandola in alternate tunings\, and inability to hold his whiskey. On banjo he plays in the older clawhammer and two-finger styles. Stuart has won awards for traditional singing (Goleta Old-Time Fiddler’s Convention)\, mandola (Topanga Banjo and Fiddle Contest)\, and songwriting (West Coast Songwriter’s Association). Deeply rooted in Americana\, Stuart’s original songs are the direct outgrowth of the many years he has performed traditional music. \nTickets: $20

SUMMARY:Mirth-O-Matics
DESCRIPTION:The Mirth-O-Matics\, Monterey County’s stellar improvisational comedy troupe\, returns to the Carl Cherry Center \nFriday\, September 9th at 7:30pm\nA Mirth-O-Matics evening of theater games features a company of actors\, a bare stage and a lot of ideas whose outlines are about as fixed as liquid mercury.  Sometimes it starts with an unlikely combination of characters placed in equally improbable situations: Whoopie cushions\, politicians\, bagel salesmen and roller derbies can all find their way into a Mirth-O-Matics’ skit.  Other skits are prompted by the audience\, who are encouraged to suggest scenes.\n \nSometimes the situation is transformed time and again as the characters undergo a series of split-second metamorphoses: an irritated polka troupe on a bus\, who then turn into faith healers at a revival meeting\, gamblers at a casino\, accusers at a witch trial and players in a rugby game.\n\nHowever bizarre the setup\, it is unique to the moment\, no script and no structure except for the games\, a fanciful array of exercises whose requirements range from making as many exits and entrances as possible in one scene to switching repeatedly back and forth from English to gibberish in another.\n\n\nTickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com

SUMMARY:Douglas W. Milliken reading from "Cream River"

Milliken is the author of the novel To Sleep as Animals and several chapbooks\, most recently the collection Cream River and the forthcoming pocket-sized edition One Thousand Owls Behind Your Chest. His stories have been honored by the Maine Literary Awards\, the Pushcart Prize anthology\, and Glimmer Train Stories\, and have been published in Slice\, McSweeney’s\, the Collagist\, and the Believer\, among others. \nwww.douglaswmilliken.com. \nTickets are $10 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com \n \nPraise for Cream River \n“I believe Doug Milliken has a firm grasp of life’s little traumas. He takes his chunk of loving meat and hangs it from a butcher’s hook on display for the world to read.” \n—from the foreword by Ben Trickey\, singer/songwriter \n“I loved every story\, every word.” \n—Erin Sprinkle\, singer/songwriter \nPraise for To Sleep as Animals \n“[…] it is impossible not to be the weird kid in Milliken’s Reno. To Sleep as Animals is a mystery about characters succumbing to their spaces\, how such a rugged landscape sustains so many strange and dangerous lives.” \n—The Collagist \n“A disturbance of a very specific flavor […] Milliken’s writing is urgent yet finely considered—a literate pleasure.” \n—Carl Skoggard\, translator of Walter Benjamin’s Berlin Childhood circa 1900. \n“A distinctive and often vertiginously frightening psychological landscape […] bracingly disturbing.” \n—Megan Grumbling\, author of Persephone in the Late Anthropocene. \nPraise for Brand New Moon \n“These stories […] glow with some sort of holy light\, as if every moment were magic\, like footage of your family picnic on super 8.” \n—The Portland Phoenix \n“Seriously the funniest thing I have ever read. I was laughing so much that [my wife] yelled at me. Probably because she was sleeping. And it was 2 AM.” \n—Derek Kimball\, Last House Productions

SUMMARY:The Collection: A Play Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Peggy Guggenheim
DESCRIPTION:THE COLLECTION\, a theatrical collage of fictionalized vignettes celebrating the life and legacy of Peggy Guggenheim\, will be presented July 30th and 31st in Cherry Hall. Shows are at 7:30pm \nWritten and directed by Al Schnupp\, THE COLLECTION presents thirty-four brief\, significant incidents in the life of Peggy Guggenheim\, the renowned collector of modern art.  Ms. Guggenheim was married several times\, became friends with a vast assortment of American and European writers and painters\, bankrolled Emma Goldman so the activist could write her memoirs\, had an affair with Samuel Beckett\, trafficked her art to America in the midst of World War II\, introduced Jackson Pollock to the American art scene\, established galleries in London and New York City and had a tumultuous relationship with her children.  Each episode is paired with a work of art from her collection.  The artworks are transformational\, interactive\, and complement the story. \nWhile the scenes are sequential\, the images are part of a dreamscape\, where time and memory are free-flowing\, without direction.  Generally\, the pairing of images with dialogue is symbolic\, metaphorical.  Included with the images are design and directorial solutions that enable the artwork to be transformed within each scene. THE COLLECTION is performed by four actors. (831) 624-7491. \n Tickets are $20 can be purchased through Brownpapertickets.com.

SUMMARY:From the Vault: Forest Theater Poster Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: Friday\, July 15th from 5pm – 7pm.\nFrom the Vault: Forest Theater Poster Art\, a rich and prominent collection of original Forest Theater poster art\, opens Friday\, July 15th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nPart of Carmel’s Centennial\, the exhibit is drawn from the Pacific Repertory Theatre’s poster collection and will included a selection of posters—some of which can be purchased\, with proceeds benefiting Pacific Repertory Theatre and the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. \n \nThe posters are from approximately two dozen theater productions created by a range of illustrators from 1910 through the 1950’s. One of the favorite forms of entertainment in early years of Carmel was the theater arts\, whose epicenter was the Forest Theater. The collection features posters from a wide range of plays\, including Robinson Jeffers’ Tower Beyond Tragedy starring Dame Judith Anderson\, to The First Poet by Jack London\, and Fire by Mary Austin\, among others. Together\, the posters offer a window into Carmel’s vibrant theater scene and its leading actors and actress of the era. \nActor/director Herbert Heron is commonly called the founder of the Forest Theater and poet/novelist Mary Austin recognized as the muse behind the theater.  As first envisioned\, original works by California authors\, children’s theatre\, and the plays of Shakespeare were the primary focus.  Since its inception\, a variety of artists and theatre groups have presented plays\, pageants\, musical offerings and other performances on the outdoor stage\, and the facility’s smaller indoor theatre and school. \n“Heron was a known bibliophile – saving posters\, programs\, scripts and memorabilia from Carmel’s cultural history. When he passed away\, he left much of his collection to his daughter\, Constance\, who kept it packed away in their home in Carmel Valley\,” writes Stephen Moore\, Founder and Executive Director of Pacific Repertory Theatre. \nAcquired by Pac Rep prior to her death in 1990 and exhibited in depth for the first time\, the programs remain in pristine condition. Pacific Repertory Theatre\, whose annual festival of the same name\, continues to 116-year tradition of presenting Shakesperare\, Children’s Theater and contemporary plays. \nThe exhibit can be seen Monday through Friday from 11 to 4 p.m. or by appointment\, through August 26th.

SUMMARY:The Mirth-O-Matics
DESCRIPTION:The Mirth-O-Matics\, Monterey County’s stellar improvisational comedy troupe\, returns to the Carl Cherry Center Saturday\, June 25th at 7:30 p.m \nA Mirth-O-Matics evening of theater games features a company of actors\, a bare stage and a lot of ideas whose outlines are about as fixed as liquid mercury.

SUMMARY:Reading - Celebrating the Art of Getting Dressed
DESCRIPTION:Words Dressed & Undressed: Writing About Women & Clothing \nLocal author\, poet\, and playwright\, Patrice Vecchione will present a multi-media production on the subject of women and clothing. She believes that getting dressed in the morning is the best armor against almost whatever the world may throw at a person. If you feel good about how you look when you walk out the door\, you’re more likely to make it through the day smiling. That may mean nothing more than a pair of jeans and bright red lipstick or it may require a little more ingenuity—a Oaxacan huipil\, purple stockings\, and cowboy boots. Patrice has been enamored by attire and bucking against convention ever since resisting the boring Catholic School girl uniform she had to don during her formative years. She’ll present an evening of work to delight\, surprise\, and make you want to get dressed up the next morning\, even if just for the office. \nPatrice Vecchione is the editor of many poetry anthologies\, the author of two collections of poems and two nonfiction books\, most recently\, Step into Nature: Nurturing Imagination and Spirit in Everyday Life (Simon & Schuster). She teaches creative writing\, poetry and collage to adults and children. More at www.patricevecchione.com. \nTickets $15 and can be purchased online at www.brownpapertickets.com

Our mother slipped into the dress – not the plaid cotton shirtwaist or striped shift or corduroy jumper – it was that soft black chiffon\, that shimmering black taffeta\, that mesmerizing black lace — and suddenly\, magically\, domestic wrangler Mom was transformed into the alluring woman over whom Daddy was bent\, fastening her necklace with his lips at her ear. \nWe knew the magic would work for us\, too. Oh\, we might have to wait till we were twelve or thirteen\, we already knew the rings and wristbands and jeans jacket kept his eyes tracking us in school. And by fifteen we knew the great T shirt and the right jeans and must-have-these-boots-in-California-summers were what made us shine\, what would prove\, without fail\, completely enchanting. \nOf course we helped\, gave just a boost to that little dress with spaghetti straps: we wore just the right heels\, added just the most diaphanous scarf\, carried just the tiniest of bags. And naturally\, he was charmed. \nWe remember just how he fell in love that night. We can point to the record. Right there in the corner of the closet floor. Those heels\, which also yielded blisters\, are boxed along with all the pointy-toed/square toed/round-toed/open-toed/high-top-sneaker high heels. We danced. We laughed. We kicked them off. \nThe shoes lifted us into the clouds\, or at least high enough to gaze into his eyes. And that dress: slinky\, soft\, thin as air\, almost not there. When he placed his hand on shoulder\, waist\, hip –  well — it was like skin to skin. And that black/red/cream/floral/velvet/jersey/spandex sheath is hanging in the far right corner of that closet where we go to cry over John and Paul and Chuck and Alistair. Where we go to assure ourselves that he loved us then. Where we go to reset the clock\, incant the mantra that the little outfit could entrance anew. \nAnd then we take courage\, go out\, and find the next little piece of magic for the next transformation. \nSpecial thanks to our Sponsors: Madrigal\, She & Katie Foster Design

SUMMARY:4orm & Space
DESCRIPTION:4orm & Space\, an exhibit exploring spatial relations and the creative possibilities of form\, on display now through May 12. \nThe exhibit includes new work by Stefani Esta\, Josh Mitchell\, Valerie Ostenak and Rick Soto. \nOrganized by the Carl Cherry Center\, the exhibit includes examples of radical abstraction\, conceptual restraint\, and psychological exploration. \nHere are the artistic expressions of four individuals who often find more in less. It is understandable that an exhibit in a historic house that is also home to Zen meditation and Yoga would host the pure expressions of these artists in its gallery. Whether through the simplicity of a hard line\, the openness of a canvas\, the texture of hard surfaces or the multiple layers of a collage resulting in a complex whole\, each person’s expressions speak to their personal quest for meaning. For the viewer\, their work provides an opportunity to find a quiet place to contemplate and wonder and find their own meaning – in the midst of our busy days\, what more could one ask for? \nThe exhibit will be on display Mondays through Fridays from 11am – 4pm or by appointment.
