DESCRIPTION:KT Sullivan and Mark Nadler reunite to celebrate the Alan Jay Lerner centenary with their new show\, Almost Like Being In Love\, on Friday\, November 16th and Saturday\, November 17th\, at 7:00PM. The talented duo\, described by Stephen Holden of the New York Times as\,”ferociously entertaining\,” will include songs like “If Ever I Would Leave You\,” “Gigi\,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” and other Lerner masterpieces. She guest starred on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion\,” recorded six albums on the DRG Label\, was the star vocalist on two tours of China with The Manhattan Symphonie\, and was twice named one of “The Top 100 Irish Americans” by Irish America Magazine. \nMark Nadler is an internationally acclaimed singer\, pianist\, tap-dancer and comedian. He is the recipient of the 2015 Broadway World Editor’s Choice Award for Entertainer of the Year. His off-Broadway hit\, I’m a Stranger Here Myself\, has been honored with the 2013 Nightlife Award and was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and two Broadway World Awards. Mr. Nadler has performed at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops Orchestra and has been a soloist with the Baltimore Symphony\, Indianapolis Symphony\, Oregon Symphony\, National Arts Centre Symphony in Ottawa and others.  Mark is the recipient eight awards from the Manhattan Association of Cabarets\, three Backstage Bistro Awards\, two New York Nightlife Awards and two Bay Area Outer Critics’ Circle Awards. Broadway credits include Dame Edna: The Royal Tour and The Sheik Of Avenue ‘B’. SUMMARY:Monterey Comedy Improv
DESCRIPTION:Tragedy\, comedy\, or contemporary culture?  It makes no difference to the Monterey Comedy Improv\, who perform 7:30p.m.\, Saturday\, October 20th\, at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Carmel. \nThe troupe will take suggestions from the audience on a wide range of subjects to create a series of scenes and skits using whatever props are at hand. SUMMARY:"A Doll's House" Reading and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Actors Lawrence Hecht and Ashlee Temple will read excerpts from Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House”  on Saturday\, October 20th at 3:00pm. Suggested donation for tickets is $15.00 at the door. \nThe reading will be followed by a discussion with the audience to explore the play’s relevance in light of both the nineteenth century and today’s social/political climate. \nWhen Ibsen”s  “A Doll’s House” premiered in Denmark in 1879 \, it created a cry of outrage around the world\, as well as a rallying point for early feminists. The play examines the moral and ethical milieu of a world in which women have few choices and opportunities.  Most importantly\, Ibsen was interested in exploring the  consequences of such a world and its impact on women\, men\, family\, and society as a whole.  This powerful play continues to evoke strong personal and political reactions among audiences. \n\nLawrence Hecht \nLawrence Hecht \nMr. Hecht most recently appeared as Gus in Tony Kushner’s The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures at Curious Theatre Company in Denver\, Colorado\, Lawrence began his professional career in the San Francisco Bay Area over four decades ago. He acted\, taught and directed with the American Conservatory Theatre for 25 years. He has also appeared with Berkeley Rep\, the Marin Theatre Company\, the Magic Theatre\, San Jose Rep\, the Livermore Shakespeare Festival and more. Beyond the Bay\, he’s worked at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival\, the Arizona Theatre Company and the Pacific Conservatory for the Performing Arts. At the Denver Center for the Performing Arts\, he served as Head of Acting for the renowned National Theatre Conservatory. Mr. Hecht is a graduate of the University of San Francisco and the ACT Advanced Training Program. His ventures into film include the role of Neal Prescott in Wes Craven’s Scream Trilogy. He is a member of Actors’ Equity Association\, SAG/AFTRA and the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers. \nAshlee Temple \nAshlee Temple \nIs an actor\, director\, teacher and artist.  She has appeared on stage in New York City as well as regionally at the Two River Theatre Company\, The Barter Theatre\, Yale Repertory and Marin Theatre Company. She has directed here in California as well as at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts\, University of Colorado at Denver\, University of Denver\, Denver School of the Arts\, GALSCO\, Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts\, SHO in Denver\, and SisTryst Theatre Company. Ashlee received her BFA from New York University and her MFA in acting from the Yale School of Drama. Ms. Temple is currently an Associate Professor of Drama at San Joaquin Delta College.

DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center’s next exhibition\, You’d Be Prettier if You Smiled: Identity\, Gender and Dissonance\, opens Friday\, October 19th\, with an artists’ reception from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public. \nFor this exhibit\, Gail Enns selected works by the Temple Sisters\, Susan Abbott Martin\, and Maria Porges that open an important conversation about the enduring struggle women face in contemporary society. \nYou’d Be Prettier if You Smiled\, Identity\, Gender and Dissonance furthers the dialog begun with The New Domestics\, Finding Beauty in the Mundane\, mounted recently at The Monterey Museum of Art. \n“I believe that Jeanne d’Orge\, founder of The Cherry Center for the Arts\, would embrace both shows as continuing the spirit of the  Feminists and their fight for the long sought recognition of women’s art as a viable part of the contemporary art world\,” says Enns. \nThe exhibition will run in the gallery through November 30th\, 2018. \nPictured\, above: “You’d Be Prettier if You Smiled” – The Temple Sisters\, mixed media on canvas\, 40″x 60″ \n\nCurator Statement: \nYou’d Be Prettier if You Smiled: Identity\, Gender and Dissonance provides insight into the tension between genders and the relative place of women in contemporary culture. \nThis show questions our culturally accepted norms of feminine expression by calling attention to the idea that stereotypes pervade our culture not only with words — such as chauvinistic labels like “hysterical” and “shrill” — but also with images and objects — such as lace on one hand\, or saw blades on the other — that connote stereotypical ideas of feminine and masculine. \nMarie Porges’ destroys and then reconstructs ancient Gothic books into tools\, such as saw handles. Susan Abbot Martin creates hand-made doilies on saw blades; the friction between these two materials highlights the tension between genders.  The Temple Sisters\, Holly and Ashlee\, deconstruct images of young women beaming with energy\, but constricted by torn paper\, notes and ephemera.  However one chooses to interpret these works\, it is clear that each artist skillfully grapples with the distillation and presentation of female stereotypes. \nThis exhibition continues the dialog begun recently at The Monterey Museum of Art with The New Domestics\, Finding Beauty in the Mundane. \nJeanne d’Orge\, Cherry Center founder\,  would embrace this show as continuing the feminist spirit of artists such as Miriam Schapiro\, Jenny Holzer\, Eva Hesse and Louise Bougeois who have all contributed to the long fought recognition of women’s art as a critical contribution to contemporary art. \n– Gail Enns \n\nAbout the Artists: \nThe Temple Sisters work in mixed media and generate large and small works on canvas and paper\, as well as smaller three-dimensional assemblages. Their work reflects their fascination with the effects of time and memory upon iconography – personal\, spiritual and cultural. Each piece created is meant to engage the viewer in questions of the temporal nature of the image(s)\, personal memory and the hidden stories that are re-imagined through age and displacement. \nHolly Temple studied art and art history at the San Francisco Academy Art\, San Francisco State University and at C.S.U. in Florence\, Italy.  She worked in New York for many years as an Art Director at Avon\, Christian Dior\, Estee Lauder\, David Yurman\, among others and currently runs her own freelance graphic design company in Carmel-by-the-Sea\, California. \nAshlee Temple studied theatre at N.Y.U. and received her M.F.A.  from the Yale School of Drama. She continues to work in theatre as a director and teacher in Stockton\, CA. \n  \nSusan Abbott Martin received her MFA in 1981 from the California College of Arts and Crafts.  Martin has exhibited at the Oakland Museum at City Center; Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artist Gallery; and Dennos Museum at Northwestern Michigan State\, Traverse City. \n“Not Your Grandmother’s Crocheted Coverlet #3” – Susan Abbott Martin \nHer work has been reviewed in Art Forum\, the SF Chronicle\, Artweek\, and the World Herald in Omaha\, Nebraska.  Martin has received numerous grants\, awards and residencies\, including two grants from the Pollock Krasner Foundation; the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest International Artists Program at Monet’s garden in Giverny\, France; the Bemis Foundation in Omaha\, Nebraska; and Yaddo in Saratoga Springs\, New York. She currently lives and works in Oakland\, California. \n  \nMaria Porges is an artist and writer whose work has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions since the late 1980s. She received a SECA award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and has been in residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts twice. \n“Celestial Blue” (2016) Maria Porges \nA finalist for the Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Art Writer’s Grant in 2014\,  her critical writing has appeared in many publications\, including Artforum\, Art in America\, Sculpture\, American Ceramics\, Glass\, New York Times Book Review\, and a host of other now-defunct art magazines. She has also authored essays for over 100 exhibition catalogues and dozens of scripts for museum audio tours. Porges is an Associate Professor at California College of the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Women’s Voices\, a reading exploring the poetry of Kate Aver Avraham\, Laura Bayless and Jennifer Lagier\, will be held Friday\, October 12th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.00\, available through brownpapertickets.com or by calling (831) 624-7491. \n  \nAbout the poets: \n Kate Aver Avraham is a poet\, children’s author\, art enthusiast\, community volunteer nature lover and mischief-maker. Her poems have appeared in many journals and anthologies as well as the Celebration of the Muse chapbook\, Perhaps the Truth is Also Blue. Her latest children’s book was What Will You Be\, Sara Mee\, from Charlesbridge\, Boston.   She is currently working on a collection of poetry as well as a memoir\, The Sibling Diaries. \n Laura Bayless is the author of four collections of poetry\, including her most recent book Chairs in the River published by FutureCycle Press.. Her poems have appeared in local and national publications\, and anthologies\, including Dancing on the Brink of the World\, Selected Poems of Point Lobos\, Porter Gulch Review\, The Homestead Review\, and Blue Heron. She is co-editor of an award-winning compilation of stories and poems about the Carmel River – Passion for Place. She participated in seven Women’s Voices readings at the Carl Cherry Center in Carmel and multiple Women and Food art and poetry presentations on the Monterey Peninsula.  \n Jennifer Lagier is a retired college librarian. She taught with California Poets in the Schools\, has published fourteen books\, edits the Homestead Review\, and helps coordinate Monterey Bay Poetry Consortium readings. Her newest books are: Scene of the Crime (Evening Street Press)\, Harbingers (Blue Light Press)\, Camille Abroad (FutureCycle Press)\, Like a B Movie (FutureCycle Press). SUMMARY:Improv Classes at The Cherry - Grades 9-12
DESCRIPTION:In this session of eight classes\, students (grades 9-12) will learn the art of improvisational theater\, including improv technique\, short-form games and long-form scenes.  Classes will be held in the Cherry Center’s gallery\, located on the northwest corner of Fourth and Guadalupe\, Carmel. \nInstructor Barbara Rees has been teaching theatre for forty-five years.  For the past nine years\, she was an english teacher and director of theatre at York School where she launched an acting program and a study of design and world theatre traditions. Nick Rees\, professional improvisational actor and former touring member of Chicago’s famed The Second City\, will Skype in for two of the sessions. \nBe spontaneous\, creative\, playful and imaginative while you develop valuable theatre skills. $100 per session (8 classes) or $15 per individual class. DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Carl Cherry Center for the Arts will be stop #38 on the Monterey County Artists Open Studio Tour on September 29th and 30th\, 2018\, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This free tour is a self-guided journey of artist studios and exhibition spaces throughout Carmel and the Carmel Valley. The tour will extend to Salinas\, Salinas Valley\, and North & South County locations on October 6th and 7th\, from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. \nThis year\, participating artists include Peter Hiller (numerous art mediums); Carole Pavlo (sculpture\, painting\, etching); Tim Dale Hill (photography and watercolor); and Christine Watten (painting\, ceramics and glass). \nThe public is invited to the Tour Gala Kick-off on Friday\, September 21\, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.\, at the Walter Lee Avery Gallery of Seaside City Hall\, 440 Harcourt Avenue\, Seaside. DESCRIPTION:Feleboga will perform a concert of old-time music from the Appalachians on Friday\, August 24th\, at 7:00 pm at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts in Carmel. Feleboga (fiddle bows) is a band from Norway\, composed of family members Mattias Thedens  (fiddle\, banjo\, vocals)\, Elizabeth Gaver (fiddle\, vocals)\, and Hans-Hinrich Thedens (guitar\, banjo\, vocals). Tickets are $15.00\, available through Brown Paper Tickets or by calling (831) 624-7491. \nAfter living in Johnson City for several months in 2004\, they have returned to the Appalachian area almost every summer to continue their immersion in the music – fiddle tunes\, songs\, and ballads. The concert will present two new string band CDs featuring the family. Stories and projected photographs will illustrate their journey with the music. \nFeleboga Stringband’s “Tugboat to Hamburg” includes two additional American musicians living in Norway. The CD has several songs and fiddle tunes\, two with original texts. Feleboga Stringband has performed and played for dancing in Norway\, Denmark\, and Germany. \n“The Moose Whisperers” is the self-titled debut CD of the exciting young band with Mattias on fiddle. The Moose Whisperers won the old-time band contest at the prestigious Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop) in 2016. After performing at the festival the following year\, the band recorded this CD in Washington DC. Through the thoughtful play of koan practice\, students learn to live freshly and immediately with everything that arises – however it appears: as breath\, headache or bird song. \n“Lavender Swirl\, Lower Antelope Canyon\, Navajo Reservation\, Arizona” – Kenneth Parker \nThis exhibition explores the diverse approaches of contemporary artwork and photography when paired with 9th century Chinese koans\, from the forceful brushwork of Tracey Adams to the contemplative canvases of Leonard Han\, and enigmatic spatial forms of Deanna Forbes. DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the Family of Things\, a poetry reading and conversation with George Lober\, Kathryn Petruccelli and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts\, will be presented in the Cherry Theater on July 27th\, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Suggested donation for the evening is $15.00. \nIn her poem “Wild Geese\,” Mary Oliver writes that the world calls to us like wild geese\, announcing our place “in the family of things.”   Poets George Lober\, Kathryn Petruccelli and Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts will explore the ways in which poetry shows us our place “in the family of things” through readings and discussions of their own poems and the poems of others. \n  \nAbout the poets: \nKathryn Petruccelli \nKathryn Petruccelli is a bi-coastal poet and writer with aspirations in radio\, obsessions around the meaning of home\, and a deep belief in the power of story. Kitty tends to teach things – like storytelling\, sign language\, and English to speakers of other languages. She spent eight years writing about community events and theater for the Herald. She was a long-time student in Ellen Bass’ workshops and has more recently been working with another Santa Cruz poet\, Danusha Laméris. Her work has been published in various places including regional anthologies in the Monterey Bay as well as the Pioneer Valley in western Massachusetts. Kitty’s poetry is forthcoming in Rattle\, and her piece “How to Read This Essay” was chosen as the 2015 winner of San Francisco’s Litquake Festival essay contest. \n  \n\nGeorge Lober \nGeorge Lober is the author of two books of poetry Shift of Light and A Bridge to There.  His poems have appeared in numerous journals and e-zines\, including the former Eclectic Literary Forum; MiPoesias; Lily; Sage; Quarry West; Sand Hill Review; Porter Gulch Review\, and Monterey Poetry Review. Lober is a former winner of the Ruth Cable Memorial Prize for Poetry and currently lives in Monterey\, California. \n  \n\nElliot Ruchowitz-Roberts \nElliot Ruchowitz-Roberts is author of White Fire\, a collection of poems published last year by The Ping Pong Free Press of the Henry Miller Memorial Library.  He is the author of two chapbooks of poetry\, To Mary (after eight and The Sweet Taste; co-editor of the college text Bridges; co-editor/co-translator of two works from the Telugu\, Sudha (Nectar) by Chalam and The Selected Verses of Vemana\, both of which have been accepted into UNESCO’s Collection of Representative works:  Indian Series; and co-author of Bowing to Receive the Mountain:  Essays by Lin Jensen and Poetry by Elliot Roberts.   His poetry has also appeared in various journals and anthologies. \nRuchowitz-Roberts coordinates the Tor House Foundation’s annual Prize for Poetry and its annual reading series\, and coordinated the National Endowment for the Arts “The Big Read:  The Poetry of Robinson Jeffers\,” during which he read and performed Jeffers’s poetry at venues throughout Monterey County.  Poet-in-the-Schools for the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Ruchowitz-Roberts presents poetry writing workshops in high schools throughout Monterey County and coordinates the annual Monterey County High School Poetry Awards. \n  \n  \n  \n

Monies raised will help us continue to provide quality artistic\, educational and cultural programs for the residents of Monterey County. The evening will feature food and wine\, nonstop entertainment\, and photos highlighting the Cherry Center’s 70 year history in Carmel-by-the-Sea.This year we are honoring Professor Emeritus Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts\, Monterey Peninsula College\, and Art Curator Amy Essick\, Montage Health/Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula\, for their ongoing  contributions to the arts. \nFor more than twenty years\, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts has provided instruction in creative writing and poetry through the Cherry Center’s programs. Professor Emeritus at Monterey Peninsula College where he taught composition\, literature\, public speaking and humanities for 32 years\, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts has published two chap books of poetry and co-author of Bowing to Receive the Mountain:  Essays by Lin Jensen and Poetry by Elliot Roberts. White Fire\, a collection of poetry\, was published last year. \nAmy Essick is the Art Curator for Montage Health – Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.  Her responsibilities include the art collection located at the hospital and 18 existing and in-progress facilities from Salinas to Carmel. Amy’s work with art and beauty in the healthcare environment connects our patients and staff with the dynamic creativity in our region. Written by Peter Thabit Jones and directed by Carey Crockett\, the play looks into the life and influence of artist and sculptor Edmund Kara. \nThe production portrays Edmund’s relationship to his art and to the dramatic Big Sur Coast. Edmund\, the sculptor of the Phoenix Bird at Nepenthe and the bust of Elizabeth Taylor for the movie “The Sandpiper\,” turned his back on fame and fortune\, devoting himself instead to what his soul might release into powerful archetypes from the massive shapes of wood that presented themselves to him. His work has been translated into over twenty languages. He has received a number of awards\, including the Eric Gregory Award for Poetry (The Society of Authors\, UK)\, The Royal Literary Fund Award (UK)\, an Arts Council of Wales Award\, the 2016 Ted Slade Award for Service to Poetry (UK) and the 2017 Homer: European Medal for Art and Poetry. His libretto\, Ermesinde’s Long Walk\, for composer Albena Petrovic\, premiered at the Philarmonie Luxembourg in 2017 and his full libretto for her\, Love and Jealousy\, premieres at the National Opera House Stara Zagora in Bulgaria in May 2018. SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Fire in the Wood
DESCRIPTION:The Fire in the Wood\, an exhibit exploring the life and art of the legendary Big Sur sculptor Edmund Kara\, opens Friday\, May 18th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts with a reception from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nConsidered one of Big Sur’s most illustrious and secretive artists\, Edmund Kara started his career in the wardrobe and costume departments of Universal and Paramount Studios during the 1950s\, later becoming a clothing designer for Lena Horne\, Peggy Lee\, and others.  During this time\, Kara extended his artistic endeavors to include sculpture\, painting\, and drawing. In 1962\, he left the fashion industry for good to establish a studio in Big Sur\, California.  Two of his better-known pieces include a sculpture of Elizabeth Taylor for the film\, “The Sandpiper\,” and “The Phoenix” on the deck of Nepenthe\, Big Sur.  Kara’s body of work is arresting; with smooth finishes and curvy wood masks\, biblical figures and mythological creatures\, large and imposingly heavy looking\, confrontational\, dark with emotion. \nThe Fire in the Wood\, a play about the life of Edmund Kara\, opens in the Cherry Hall Theater on Friday\, June 1st\, for a six performance run.  For more information\, click here. \nThe exhibition will run through June 16\, 2018. \nPictured: “Yin Yang” – Edmund Kara\, 1975

DESCRIPTION:25TH ANNUAL ROBERT CAMPBELL HIGH SCHOOL POETRY AWARDS \nRobert Campbell High School Poetry Awards Ceremony \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Carl Cherry Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the 25th Annual Robert Campbell Monterey High School Poetry Awards. The contest is presented in conjunction with  Thinking Out Loud\, a series of programs devoted to high school arts and poetry.  An awards ceremony honoring the student poets will be held at 2:00p.m. on Saturday\, April 28th\, 2018\, at the Monterey Public Library on Pacific Street in Monterey. \nHigh school students in Monterey County are invited to submit up to three poems to the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, P.O. Box 863\, Carmel\, California 93921\, or info@carlcherrycenter.org. All submissions must be received no later than March 29th\, 2018.  Award recipients will receive a certificate of merit\, cash award\, and a book containing this year’s prize winning poems. \nThe Monterey County High School Poetry Awards were established in 1993 to recognize and promote excellence in high school poets\, and to develop an interest in creative expression through the written word. The awards acknowledge two fundamental insights: the redemptive power poetry can play in the lives of students\, and the importance of sustaining poetry as a legitimate art form  in today’s digitally driven culture.

SUMMARY:My Mother's Keeper
DESCRIPTION:My Mother’s Keeper\, a play written by Jane Press and directed by Robin McKee\,  moves fluidly back and forth between 1914 and the present. Taking place within the memories of four generations of women in a show business family. Looking through the lens of the mother-daughter relationship dynamic. My Mother’s Keeper is an examination of our matriarchal inheritance\, with all its inherent – and inherited – blessings and curses.  It is a moving\, sometimes very funny\, sometimes disturbing\, ultimately healing work. \nMy Mother’s Keeper opens at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Carmel\, on April 27th\, and will run May 27th\, 2018.  Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30PM\, and Sundays at 2:00PM\, There will be two performances on Mother’s Day (Sunday\, May 18th)\, at 2:00PM and 7:30PM. She comes from a show business family in New York and Los Angeles. She originally produced My Mother’s Keeper at the Cherry Center in 2012 for a sold out five week run\, and in L.A. at the Electric Lodge Theater in 2013 with a critically acclaimed five week run. She will be hosting a Go Fund Me campaign during this current production to help underwrite the costs of a New York production in 2019. \n About the Director \nRobin McKee is well respected for her work with new play development in California and Colorado\, through programs such as L.A.’s Mark Taper Forum New Works Festival and  Colorado Shakespeare Festival’s New Works Project. She was the founder and producing artistic director for Carmel Performing Arts Festival\, developed Telluride Repertory Theater Company’s seasonal productions for 15 years as guest artist and artistic director\, and has worked as a freelance director around the country for 20 years.  Robin loves combining new and seasoned performers and artists in the development of new plays.  One of her favorite venues in California is the Carl Cherry Center for the Performing Arts\, where she first collaborated with the venue for the development of Karen Black’s one-woman show in 1992.

SUMMARY:Dick Whittington - Jazz At The Cherry
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated jazz pianist\, Dick Whittington\, will be performing in our gallery on Sunday\, April 8th\, from 3:00-5:00pm\, as part of our ongoing Jazz At The Cherry series.  Whittington\, a long-time Big Sur resident\, began his career in Los Angeles in the 1950s\, playing with such jazz notables as Dexter Gordon\, Bobby Hutcherson\, and Sonny Criss.  After relocating to Berkeley in the 1960s\, he performed with Stan Getz\, Chet Baker\, Art Pepper\, James Moody\, Anita O’Day\, Mel Torme\, Bobby McFerrin and many others. He was co-founder of the Berkeley School District Jazz Program which fostered the careers of Joshua Redman\, Benny Green and dozens of others. Since arriving on the Monterey Peninsula\, he has played at most of the major jazz venues and also performed as house pianist at Carmel’s Cypress Inn and Bernardus Lodge. \nBob Basa \nJoining Dick will be guitar master Bob Basa.  A Brazilian music specialist\, Basa has been in high demand in the Monterey area and has played continuously at Spanish Bay for over ten years.  His past performances also include the Monterey Jazz Festival. \nTickets\, $15\, available through brownpapertickets.com or by calling(831) 624-7491. DESCRIPTION:Through Beginner’s Eyes\, an exhibit exploring contemplative photography\, opens Friday\, January 12th  with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The reception is free and open to the public. \nContemplative photography is a method of seeing and photographing the world in ways that reveal a richness and beauty that is often hidden from view. Instead of emphasizing subject matter or the technical aspects of photography\, contemplative camera-work accentuates images based upon fresh perception. At turns abstract and abstruse or descriptive and precise\, these images endeavor to describe the world in subtle and unexpected ways.
