DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center for the Arts is pleased to announce the Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts Monterey County High School Poetry Awards 2023. The program was designed to recognize and promote excellence in high school poets and develop an interest in creative expression through the written word. A reading and ceremony honoring this year’s award-winning student poets will be held 2:00pm on Saturday\, May 20th\, at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Fourth and Guadalupe\, Carmel. \nThe program (formerly the Robert Campbell Monterey County High School Poetry Awards) was renamed this year to honor Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts\, who provided inspiration and writing instruction to thousands of area high school students. \nCherry Center Poet-in-Schools: \nPatrice Vecchione \nOur teaching poet this year is Patrice Vecchione\, the author of two collections of poetry and three nonfiction books\, most recently My Shouting\, Shattered\, Whispering Voice: A Guide to Writing Poetry & Speaking Your Truth. DESCRIPTION:Holi Moli: Beginner’s Mind\, an exhibit focusing on expressionism\, naïve and innocent art as spiritual expressions\, opens October 28th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. A reception will be held at from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.\n\n\n\nHighlighting both the artwork of children and nationally-recognized artists\, the exhibit including paintings by Sam Tchakalian\, Sarah Klein\, Tom Nakashima\, Ken Hale\, Tracey Adams\, Al Carter\, Judith Foosaner\, and students from Forest Grove Elementary School in Pacific Grove\, among others. \nOriginally\, naive art was any form of visual art that reflected a fresh and innocent vision of the world and was created by a person who lacked or rejected traditional understanding in portraying those objects. DESCRIPTION:The Carl Cherry Center will host eight artists during this year’s Monterey County Artists Studio Tour on October 8\, 9 & 15\, 16. Hours are 11:00 – 5:00pm Saturdays\, and noon to 5:00pm Sundays. The event is free and open to the public. \nFive artists will participate the first weekend of the tour (October 8\, 9): student and professional image production and mural artists of Hijos Del Sol; Rhaea Maurel\, ceramics and painting; Celine Picus\, acrylic and oil painting; Holly Rose\, hand sewn lampshades; and Gloria Shaw\, mono prints and painting. DESCRIPTION:In Their Own Likeness: Carmel Bohemian Painters\, an exhibit of contemporary Carmel artists’ portraits and their art\, opens Friday\, September 2nd at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. A reception for the artists will be held Friday\, September 2nd from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nArtist studios have always been absorbing venues\, crowded with copious materials\, paintings and tools. They are places of alchemy\, revealing the mysterious origin of artwork and the rituals of creation. There have been a range of approaches to studio representations\, including the famous Courbet’s studio\, which is a combination of reality and allegory\, while some contemporary representations display just fragments of studios\, often done in styles the artists supported. \n“The study celebrates local working artists who carry on the legacy of the Carmel Bohemian art culture. It is an homage to both the artists and the art colony of Carmel by the Sea\,” says photographer Randy Tunnell who created the portraits of artists in their studios. “The collection of photographs will be the graphic record of Carmel artists from this time period and be a historic narrative of the creatives that helped to build the town over a hundred years ago.” \nRandy Tunnell is a Carmel based photographer with over thirty year’s professional experience providing photography to agencies and clients\, large and small. SUMMARY:Imagining Carmel: The Art of Jeanne D'Orge and Poetry of Dora Hagemeyer
DESCRIPTION:When Carmel was a small community of artists and bohemians\, many studios and living rooms doubled as galleries or performance spaces. With few formal venues available\, non-conformist artist and poet\, Jeanne D’Orge\, and her inventor husband\, Carl Cherry\, opened their home to share new ideas\, creations\, and perspectives. Their passion to enrich the community’s culture through support of experimental and intellectual arts has continued over the Cherry Center’s nearly 75-year history. \nOur latest exhibit – “Imagining Carmel” – honors the spirit of two such bohemians\, featuring the artwork of our founder\, Jeanne D’Orge\, paired with prose by noted poet and painter Dora Hagemeyer. Ceramics by Brad Schwieger complement the exhibit’s visual and literary storytelling. \n“Imagining Carmel” opens Friday\, July 29th through Saturday\, August 20th\, 2022. SUMMARY:The Most Beautiful Mistake You Can Make
DESCRIPTION:The Most Beautiful Mistake You Can Make\, an exhibit exploring errors\, omissions and faults in art\, opens Friday\, June 3rd at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. A reception for the artists will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The Cherry Center is located at the corner of 4th and Guadalupe\, Carmel. \nThe exhibit intends to emphasis how random errors can become an artistic catalyst to an aesthetically complete work of art.  In some folk art traditions artists insert “intentional” errors into handmade textiles as a gesture to the perfection of divinity—or\, at least\, the imperfection of humans. In the Japan\, the practice of “kintsugi” (gold splicing) uses errors to enhance ceramics. Instead of discarding marred vessels\, practitioners of the art repair broken items with a golden adhesive that enhances the break lines\, making the piece unique. Abstract Expressionism is built on enhancing and using errors in painting. \nThe exhibit will include recent artwork by Tracey Adams\, Rob Barnard\, Allen D. Carter\, Laurel Farrin\, Judith Foosaner\, Nancy Genn\, Francie Hester\, Barbara Johnson\, Tom Nakashima\, Sammy Peters\, Tony Sheeder\, Mark Tanous\, and The Temple Sisters. \nThe exhibit can be seen Wednesdays through Saturdays\, 12 to 4 p.m. or by appointment through June 25th. DESCRIPTION:Mountains and Waters Without End\, an exhibit celebrating western landscape\, opens Friday\, April 8th at Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. Comprised of approximately 20 paintings\, the exhibit will include recent work by Margaret Rinkovsky and Jan Wagstaff. A reception for the artists will be held Friday\, April 8th from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nOrganized to explore various time periods\, styles\, and themes in landscape painting\, Mountains and Rivers Without End investigates the relationship between abstraction and landscape painting\, the effects of photography on landscapes and the examination of the materiality in painting. The exhibit brings together two artists who have been working with landscape and may lack conventional aesthetic hooks of expression\, narrative\, and beauty. She received her Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from UCLA. She also holds a Masters of Arts degree in Printmaking and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting\, also from UCLA. Ms. Rinkovsky is the recipient of the prestigious SECA Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, was a nominee to the American Academy of Arts in New York\, and received the Distinguished Artist Award from the Santa Cruz Art League. \nMargaret Rinkovsky’s paintings and drawings are referential to landscapes. For this artist nature serves as the stimulus for her oeuvre\, not as a literal reflection but as a private and personal interpretive experience.  Her work seems to synthesize the “material and spiritual” in nature—where meaning resides in and is communicated by the formal visual elements of painting.” George W. Neubert\, Associate Director\, SFMMA \nJan Wagstaff \nOver the past four decades Jan Wagstaff’s paintings have been exhibited in museums and galleries world-wide and acquired for private and public collections around the globe. Her artwork has garnered extensive reviews\, and she has been awarded numerous Artist-in-Residence opportunities\, grants\, fellowships and prizes.  Wagstaff’s imagery derives primarily from nature\, which she renders in oil on canvas. She is especially drawn to marshland grasses\, aspen canopies\, birds in flight\, waterways and reflections. Says Jan\, “As I observe the natural world\, I am ever conscious of how I am experiencing it – how all of my senses play a part in my perception. My work is about seasons\, sounds\, texture\, movement and shapes. It is about blending colors\, subtleties of light and dark\, and things near and far. About seeing and celebrating the ordinary such that it becomes extraordinary. My paintings are visual entertainment but even more\, I hope they encourage viewers to recall places that hold special meaning to them.”

Due to the rise in Covid cases in Monterey County and the aggressive transmission of the Omicron variant\, the Cherry Center is canceling the performance scheduled for January 2nd.  We apologize for any inconvenience. Ticket holders will be contacted for a full refund. \nThe Cherry Trio (Elizabeth Gaver – baroque violin\, Penny Hanna -viola da gamba\, Michael Peterson – harpsichord) with guest violinist David Wilson will perform music from the seventeenth century on baroque violins\, viola da gamba\, and harpsichord. The program includes trio sonatas by Purcell\, Rosenmüller and Muffat\, a Marais suite for viola da gamba\, and harpsichord solo by Fischer. The French\, Italian\, German\, and English styles of this period stand in contrast to one another in creative ways that are often combined within the same piece. Typical for the early Baroque period\, these works express a wide range of “affects” or emotions – the melancholy adagio\, stately allemande\, exuberant passacaglia and much more! \nThe Cherry Trio has performed at the Cherry Center annually for ten years to welcome the New Year. Unfortunately we couldn’t carry on that tradition last year\, but we are very happy to be together again in 2022! As the concert will be held indoors\, proof of vaccination is required\, as well as mandatory masking while indoors. \n

She employs drawing\, paper cutouts and live-action footage to create both narrative and abstract pieces. After a decade of working in stop-motion animation\, she continues to investigate the language of movement in her print-based works. Using image sequences and repetition\, she focuses on individual parts that make up the whole work. \n\n  \n“Waveshaper” David Kwan – Sound Generated Video \nDavid Kwan is a sound and visual artist\, who adapts musical structures into visual compositions. For the work in this exhibit\, he takes inspiration from visualizations and analyses of sound\, such as oscilloscope displays and spectrograms\, and uses electronic synthesis techniques to produce signal patterns in sound and image. Layering and arranging these signals into chords and clusters\, he plays with harmony\, counterpoint and phasing\, to highlight the interplay of line and pattern\, and light and color. SUMMARY:A Timeless Spring Online Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:“A Timeless Spring\,” an exhibit exploring the artwork of Mrs. Carl Cherry and Reuben Kadish\, closed September 4th. The exhibit can be seen online through October 31\, 2021. \nVISIT EXHIBIT \nIn the years around World War II\, modernist art produced in the United States was varied in style and subject matter.  Artwork from this era was produced by an increasingly diverse group of artists working in a range of media\, as revealed by the works in the current exhibition. The muscular surrealism and abstract expressionism of Reuben Kadish meets the churning forms of an early WWII-era Carmel art by Mrs. Carl Cherry (Jeanne D’Orge). Focusing on the period of 1935 to 1980\, the exhibit is not a unified conjuring of American modernism\, but rather a cross-section of many-sided–even incompatible–art forms\, media and themes.\nReuben Kadish–painter\, muralist\, printmaker and sculptor–was born in Chicago in 1913. At fourteen he began studying with Lorser Feitelson. Politically outspoken\, Kadish caught the attention of Jackson Pollock and they became friends. Kadish taught at the Pacific Institute of Music & Fine Art and assisted muralist Siqueiros in Mexico and in southern California. During the 1930s\, he was in San Francisco and head of the mural division for the Federal Art Project. During WWII Kadish was an art correspondent for Life magazine. After the war\, he purchased a dairy farm in New Jersey and withdrew from the art world until the late 1950s. Mr. Kadish then took up sculpture and taught at the Cooper Union in NYC. Kadish died in NYC on Sept. 20\, 1992. \nBorn in 1887 in England\, Jeanne D’Orge spent her childhood in Edinburgh\, London\, and Paris. Her book of verse\, Voice in the Circle\, published in 1955\, focuses on her childhood in Europe. After moving to New York in 1906\, D’Orge became associated with “The Others\,” a group of iconoclastic poets that included Marianne Moore\, William Carlos Williams\, and Wallace Stevens. Her poetry was included in the anthology The Others and The Poetry Journal. In 1923 Scribner’s Magazine published her award-winning “Lobos” poems. \nPictured: Untitled Bathers – Reuben Kadish

DESCRIPTION:Isolation is rapidly re-configuring how we understand shelter\, and sense of place. For better and worse\, shelter-in-place is defining who we are. The event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:Natural Histories
DESCRIPTION:Natural Histories\, an exhibit celebrating western landscape in painting and photography\, opens Friday\, January 17th\, with an artists reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.  The exhibition will include recent paintings by Paul Roehl and photography by Claire Lerner. \nOrganized to explore various styles and themes in landscape painting and photography\, Natural Histories investigates the relationship between abstraction and landscape painting\, the effects of photography on landscapes\, and the consideration of the materiality in both mediums.  The exhibit reflects the complex and ambiguous relationship between humans and the environment—a relationship of particular importance here in the West. \nThe exhibit can be seen Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 4 p.m.\, Saturdays\, 12 noon to 4 p.m. or by appointment through February 22nd\, 2020. \nPictured above: “Carmel” – Paul Roehl \n\nSphere of Mortal Life Series # 7 – Claire Lerner \nAbout the Artists: \nClaire Lerner was born and raised in New York\, New York. She received her MFA and BFA in Fine Art from both the State University of New York at Buffalo and the State University College at Buffalo. After graduate school Claire moved to California where she was a member of the photography faculty at Monterey Peninsula College\, Monterey\, California for ten years. In 2000 she began teaching black and white darkroom photography\, alternative photographic processes\, studio art\, and digital arts at the Santa Catalina School in Monterey\, California.  Her work has been collected by a broad range of private and public institutions\, including the Monterey Museum of Art\, Visa Corporation\, Redwood City\, CA\, Cowell College\, UCSC\, PMI\, Corporate Headquarters\, Walnut Creek\, CA\, Kaiser Permanente\, and the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula\, Monterey\, CA. \nPaul Roehl was raised in California\, primarily in the South Bay Area. He received an MA in painting and an MFA in pictorial arts from San Jose State University. He has taught college level painting\, printmaking and drawing as well as art history and art appreciation for over twenty years. His work has been shown at the San Jose Art Museum\, Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History\, Monterey Museum of Art and the Berkeley Art Center. Though his primary interest is in contemporary non-objective or abstract imagery\, he enjoys sketching plein-air and accurately recreating the techniques and style of late 19th and early 20th century landscape painters. He also turns to earlier Barbizon school painters for inspiration as well as American tonalist painters such as George Innes and William Keith. He finds the visual poetry of these artists’ subtle\, fresh and inspiring \n  \n

SUMMARY:Ekphrastic Poetry: Writing Workshop with Jodie Hollander
DESCRIPTION:Experience art at a new level and use it to inspire your writing. Internationally-known poet Jodie Hollander teaches this workshop in which participants respond poetically to the Cherry Center’s current exhibit. Study examples of celebrated poems that respond to\, or were inspired by\, art. You will then be led through a variety of writing activities inspired by the art\, ultimately leading to a draft of an original poem. The afternoon will include a discussion of poetic techniques such as the use of vivid imagery\, the importance of sonics\, how to shape a poetic line as well as techniques for drafting and revision. No experience necessary. \nThe one-day workshop will be held at the Cherry Center on Sunday\, October 20th\, from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. She studied poetry in England\, and her work has been published in journals such as The Poetry Review\, The Yale Review\, PN Review\, The Dark Horse\, The Rialto\, Verse Daily\, The New Criterion\, Australia’s Best Poems of 2011\, and Australia’s Best Poems of 2015. Her debut full-length collection\, My Dark Horses\, is published with Liverpool University Press in the UK and Oxford University Press in the US. Hollander is the recipient of a Fulbright Fellowship in South Africa\, a Hawthornden Fellowship\, a National Endowment for the Humanities Grant in Italy\, and a MacDowell Colony Fellowship. She currently lives in Colorado.

SUMMARY:Literary Reading Exploring Gun Violence and its Aftermath
DESCRIPTION:A literary reading exploring gun violence and its aftermath will be held Friday\, October 18th at 7:30 pm. The event is free and open to the public. \nProduced in conjunction with the exhibit\, Our Thoughts and Prayers Are with You\, a multimedia group exhibit organized by the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, the reading examines issues related to gun violence from a range of perspectives. Celebrated novelist Jane Smiley will be joined by poets Jennifer Lagier\, George Lober\, Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts and Jodie Hollander. \n “Our Thoughts and Prayers Are with You” explores a range of perspectives on the image and impact of guns in contemporary culture\, though none endorse them as a means to an end.  Works by artists and writers from  throughout California address an array of issues surrounding access to\, and use of\, firearms across demographic groups. The programs examines the roles that guns continue to play in our national myths\, suicide rates\, individual and mass murder\, domestic violence\, and the militarization of civilian life.

DESCRIPTION:“False Awakenings” – VIktor Klinger\n\nThe Language of Walls\, a photography exhibit exploring an array of approaches to walls\, opens Friday\, August 23rd  with an artists reception from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, Carmel.  The reception is free and the public is invited. \nTree and Wall\, West Pinnacles\, 1985 – Edna Bullock \nComplex\, challenging\, and immersive\, the exhibit is a historical look at civilization’s relationship with barriers\, both real and imagined. For centuries\, across diverse civilizations\, walls have been central to human history. This exhibit explores the various aspects of walls – artistic\, social\, political\, and historical. These categories overlap and change meaning according to context\, much like the walls themselves: erected for one reason\, their appearance and use is then altered and modified over centuries\, reflecting the civilizations that have grown and changed around them. Featuring over 15  photographers from the Monterey Bay Area\, The Language of Walls invites the viewer to contemplate how these structures – from the decorative to the divine – affect the human psyche and why we keep building them. \nWedding Wall\, Naoli\, Madhya Pradesh\, India 2008 – Jeffrey Becom \nThe work will include a range of methods and attitudes to walls\, including exterior walls\, interior walls\, social walls\, walls that heal\, walls that divide\, graffiti walls\, walls as art and psychological walls. In other words\, all the innumerable ways walls are imagined\, photographed and understood.\n\n\n\nPhotography will include work by Jeffrey Becom\, Edna Bullock\,  Susan Hyde Green\, Viktor Klinger\, Dixie Dixon\, William Giles\, Bert Ihlenfeld\, Juan Mancheno\, Kenneth Parker\,  Jacqui Turner\, Robin Winfield\,  and Steve Zmak\, among others.\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibit will run through September 20th\, 2019.

L to R: Alfred Burton\, painter William Silva\, Jeanne d’Orge\, Robinson Jeffers\, twins Donnan and Garth Jeffers. \n\nBohemian Summer: The Artwork and Life of Jeanne d’Orge\, an exhibition featuring historical photographs\, letters\, poems\, and artwork by the founder of the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts\, opens Friday\, July 19th\, and will run through August 3rd\, 2019. The exhibit will also include works by Jo Mora and Ephraim Doner. \n  \nAbout Jeanne d’Orge (Mrs. Carl Cherry)  \nBorn in 1887 in England\, Jeanne d’Orge spent her childhood in Edinburgh\, London\, and Paris. Her book of verse\, Voice in the Circle\, published in 1955\, focuses on her childhood in Europe. \nAfter moving to New York in 1906\, d’Orge became associated with “The Others\,” a group of iconoclastic poets that included Marianne Moore\, William Carlos Williams\, and Wallace Stevens. Her poetry was included in the anthology The Others and The Poetry Journal. In 1923 Scribner’s Magazine published her award-winning “Lobos” poems. \nJeanne d’Orge died on May 1\, 1964\, at the age of 87. Although her painting was recognized in her lifetime for its forcefulness and spirit with exhibits at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art\, the Park Avenue Galley in New York City\, and the De Young Museum in San Francisco\, d’Orge insisted that her paintings never be sold\, saying only\, “I’m just a paintbrush for God.” \n\n\n

Along with reasonable priced art for sale by local artists\, a silent auction\, and a raffle showcasing a collection of fine wines. To make a donation to The Cherry\, please use this link. \nMeet our Honorees: \nKatie Clare Mazzeo has performed in solo and chamber music recitals in Europe and the U.S.\, including a tour of Iceland in a series of concerts with members of the Boston symphony. She has performed and lectured at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks\, and at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester as part of an international symposium on the Biology of Music\,  and has taught piano at the New England Conservatory of Music and the Longy School of Music. Katie Clare was a featured performer on fortepiano at the Schubert Festival at San Francisco State University and has given numerous concerts on both fortepiano and harpsichord with the ensemble Zeitgeist 1800\, as well as performances at MusicSources in Berkeley\, the Old First Church in San Francisco\, and the Colton Hall Candlelight Series in Monterey. \nBrian Taylor is known for his innovative explorations of alternative photographic processes including historic 19th Century printing techniques\, mixed media\, and handmade books. His work has been exhibited nationally and abroad in numerous solo and group shows. Taylor is currently the Executive Director of the Center for Photographic Art in Carmel\, California. He received his B.A. Degree in Visual Arts from the University of California at San Diego\, an M.A. from Stanford University\, and his M.F.A. from the University of New Mexico and served as a professor of Photography for over 30 years\, and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History at San Jose State University.

SUMMARY:Color Theory: The Art of Color at the Cherry Center
DESCRIPTION:Color Theory\, an exhibit  exploring the application of color in paintings by Lucas Blok and Mel Prest\, opens Friday\, May 17th at the Carl Cherry Center for the Arts. A reception for the artists will be held at the center from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. \nThe exhibition examines the use of color from two separate\, but related\, perspectives: the large vibrant color fields of Monterey’s Lucas Blok and Mel Prest\, a non-objective San Francisco painter whose work focuses on color and perceptual visual relationships. \nColor Theory can be seen Wednesday through Friday from 11 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays noon to 4 p.m.  or by appointment through June 15th\, 2019. \nPictured\, top: “Untitled” – Lucas Blok \n\nLucas Blok has an established interest in color. His paintings are absorbing experiments in visual perception as he works with vibrant and intensely saturated hues that become a uniquely involved experience for each individual spectator.  Mr. Blok was awarded the prestigious Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant for 2011-2012\, which recognizes and generously supports his artistic merit as a professional artist over a significant period of time. \n\n“17 Seconds” – Mel Prest \nMel Prest is an artist\, curator and educator living in San Francisco. She received her BFA in Painting from Rhode Island School of Design and MFA from Mills College in Oakland.  \nHer work is focused on color and perceptual visual relationships and synaesthetic response. Her work is held in collections at Apple; The Crocker Museum of Art; Kaiser Permanente; The Mills College Art Museum\, among others. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
